I was wondering if any of you ever wean by the "Signs". I just grouped up some Heifer Calves to wean, and so far, they have hardly Bawled a bit. The old tale says to wean, when the signs are furthest from the Heart,ie Knees, and Feet.

We weaned sunday and never have had such a noisy night. Come day break yesterday everyone has shut up and hardly ever hear a sound from them.

We pulled off a handful of heifers Sunday also, took it pretty rough that night but were a little quieter last night. Still have a couple cows taking it rough, though. These are fence-line weaned, did a group a couple months back that were half fence-lined and the other half from a farm 15 miles away. I couldn't see any difference. Anyone else?

How would the moon have anything to do with weaning a calf?

Unless there are vampires or werewolves around.

I've heard there is truth in the Almanac, but I wean when I have help available and the weather is decent. I don't even have an almanac right now. Used to get them as "freebies" at the feed store or bank--but no more.

Normally, I'd disagree with Crowder just to stir him up but I have to admit there probably is something to it. Grandma always planted according to the almanac - the cheap one that grocery stores used to give away - and she could raise more corn and beans on a 1/4 acre than most could on two acres. We castrated pigs according to signs for years now we do it when ever time allows.

We wean when they're ready don't know half how to read an almanac, let alone do it by the moon.

We wean different than most as well, we'll wean in smaller groups or even doubles or triples and then after they're off the cow for a month they all end up in the same pen. Still trying different things.

My neighbor says that there isn't much that I won't try but, I will try this weaning by the moon thing if someone will explain it to me.

I've got one I'm weaning now. I am about a week early according to the almanac, but I was home and the oppurtunity presented.

Maybe that's why she knocked the gate off its hinges the first time we put her in the pen.

But, we got her back in after she calmed back down, and she has stayed put this time. :)
