Water Point

Is it best to have a permanent water point:
At the top of a hill or
At the bottom of the hill, or
On the side of a hill?

My main reason for asking is to minimize erosion.

The bottom would be the worst, too much chance of it becoming a real bog if you get a real rainy period. My opinion that top or side would be a toss up.

Probably not a concern for you guys, but a tank at the bottom of the hill here is likely to get covered by snow, and be a bugger to get to in winter. Neighbor has one just like that :roll:

Most of my tanks are located on top a hill. Gets the most breeze in the summer. Blows clear in winter :idea:

Unless you have a level spot partway up the hill I'd put it at the top as well.. half way up the hill without a level area will get eroded badly.

Probably going to have a mud hole around it any time it rains no matter where you put it.

:nod: I put a 15 ton belly dump of pit run gravel around my tanks. NRCS was satisfied :idea:

I have done three that way. They are all on flat land.

I tend to have the header tank at the top of the hill to then gravity feed the water troughs which are mostly on a side slope.

That was my thinking as well. And lay then cover with gravel.

better on top, makes cows work the country. water on top, supplement on bottom.
