Waiting for Spring

It's a long and cold winter here in Quebec but all animals are indoors. 118 charolais calves since January 3, only 4 more to go for this calving season.

Yes, end of November until around May 25.

WOW I cant imagin the work that goes into that. And how big your barns must be.

Yep the prices are good this year and we have a lot of demand. We have 17 yearlings already sold (private treaty) normally it's 4-5 at this time of the year.

How do you keep your barns so clean with that many cattle in them?
Are the calves just hanging out together in those photos or have they been pulled off the cows?

The cows are not so clean just a good choice of pictures! You'll see how it is in the barns with those new pictures.
We have to show the calf 2-3 times the place where they can rest in peace away from the mothers. They like straw and it's a bit hotter there but they can go drink milk each time they want or when mother call.
We begin in fall our bedding with sand 3-4 inch, after we use wood shavings, peat moss, straw. It's cold barns so a lot of manure is frozen. We clean the concrete floor behind where they eat each 2-3 days when it's wet.
Yes we have drop curtains and one barn have a garage door.

We received 1 foot of snow since yesterday with wind and yes it's a lot of doors to clean!

Yea, I like it anytime somebody post a picture. i remember you did atleast once before. I never knew anybody raised beef cattle like that.

Thanks everybody, two more pictures that explain a bit why our cows are in good shape. The cows eat corn silage in a bunker.

That quite interesting. Do you get much waste from them stepping on it? Or are the headstalls fastened at the bottom some how too? I suppose a couple large gate locks like this would work

Have the headstalls on a rail and then just move ahead hole to hole as they eat.
