question for the experienced cowhands:

I've got 13 head with three more calves on the way. Two calves were born at beginning of April. One more due any minute (hopefully) and two more due sometime after May 27th...

We had the vet out last June 1 to do our spring workup, but I didn't have any still-pregnant cows last year that time and I may this year.

My question is: based on the info above, what do you recommend I do as far as timing my vet visit? Should I wait until all calves are born, even if that goes into late June or July? Should I have him out in the next few weeks even if that means I still have a few pregnant cows?

If we had a Vet's help while working our Cattle, I'd try to wait until all the Cows had Calved.BUT I realize you may not want to put it off because of your expected Calving dates...Probably wouldn't be cost effective or time effective to have him out twice. Just my nickels worth.
 
Can you do what needs to be done for the few left to calve? If you can then I would have the vet out on schedule and then do those few myself. If you can't then I would wait til all are in and then have the vet out.

Sounds like you know your vet..... suggest calling him/her.....tell him the facts...... and ask what would be the best time to schedule him.

If he suggest two visits...ask why...and that you need to keep the expenses down can we do this in one trip. You may be suprised. At lease you will be armed to make a judgement. Vets ...generally...like to be kept up on a herd's plans...less surprises from him to deal with.

That is late in the summer for spring/early summer needs. In this business prevention is very important to the bottom line.

It all depends on WHAT you are having the vet do to the cows. If he/she is using a killed vaccine, it can be done at any time. Also, they can be wormed & deliced while pregnant.
But, you need to learn how to give shots & deworming yourself. It is very easy if you have facilities. Ask the vet to SHOW you what he/she is doing & ask if you can purchase the products from the vet. If not, you can buy vaccines anywhere. Vaccines are not prescribed drugs.
 
thanks for the great advice/insight. I have a great vet who seems to enjoy showing me how to do things ( at least he's good at acting like he enjoys it)... I have only had him out twice before, so this time I do plan to learn even more. In fact, last time out he showed me how to inject antibiotics in the eye tissue to fight pink eye, and I was able to do that myself later in the summer with perfect results...

I do plant to learn as much as possible each time so that I can do everything myself...

in any event, I'll be calling him soon to find out what he thinks the schedule should be...
