Wife's younger brother had his leg amputated Wednesday due to complications from diabetes.
He is 57 and currently on LTD that will run out soon. He has filed for SS disability .
Doctor's tell him it will be a year and a half through the healing and the prosthesis process.
We are looking at services to help him live independently for the next year and a half.
Now with all that said he served in the USN for 12 years, is there any benefits or services the VA could or would help with.

Cb gonna pm you never mind it was hard trying to type with my wife driving I'm on my cell my mom served 27 yrs army and now works for the va and told me first thing you need to do is get him to the va and get him a social worker and they will help with his needs. If you want me to call or my # so I can ask her more questions pm me she's coming up to see me tomorrow I just called her for you to see.

A shame that veterans should have to search for care. They deserve the utmost care that this country can supply to them ! IMHO

Fantastic I will PM you some questions as we just don't know where to start
the process. He currently is still in ICU and is going to be in the hospital for an extended time.
This is a good guy that worked as a diesel mechanic. About seven months ago he got a sore on his foot and wouldn't heal.
So he has been on sick leave /LTD since then. Doctors finally made the decision to amputate this week.
He is totally broke paying medical cobra premiums and bills. The family has been helping, but his life has to change now.
Even with a prosthetic leg I doubt the doctors will let him work in that environment to protect the other foot.

yea they are just like civilian hospitals all depends on where you go.

If our boys in Austin had not been so hard headed about expanding medicaid then he would qualify for care that would not be of cost to him. But they had such a hatred for our President that they refused to do anything. Think about it the next time you vote.

Well my view on medicaid runs with their's.
I don't believe in helping all these people that have never served their country
or done an honesty day's work in their life.
Knowing my BIL he would never take medicaid.
He served on a Boomer for 12 years those boys are pretty independent.

There is a large VA office in Waco where they do paper work but the news keeps running stories about them being months behind on paperwork. Hopefully you find help for him my Grandfather was a WW2 Vet and I feel bad for the way Vets are treated. It is sad that bums who never work just smoke dope and pop out babies can go get help faster than a Vet who served his country.

Caustic I know people that have worked all of their life and supported themselves and when they got to the point that they could not help themselves they go on medicaid because they cannot afford hospitals and be able to live. This is no fault of their's to be able to be in the right place at the right time to get a job that let them make enough to live in the later years without nothing to worry about. I hate the fact the your BIL has health problems an my not be able to stay in the occupation that he is trained. Medicaid, Medicare, SS, SSI is the safety net that is supposed to catch him. If the net is close woven it will work but when the net is widely spaced he will fall through.

5 months and counting. VA benefits, health care for diabetes, cancer, and
other problems. To date nothing but a letter to let me know they are still
working on my applications. Lots of prior leg work requiring input from all
my medical providers before paper work can be sent to VA. I have to keep
a backup of all documents submitted. Paper pile is about 1.75 inches and growing.

CB how about the American Legion, or the VFW, they carry a lot of weight for Veterans. I would take him to a Veterans Hospital and apply. Best of luck.

Wife has got in touch with a VA social worker and is getting the paper work to file for assistance.
He has a retirement just wasn't ready, along with SS disability he will be ok on that front.
He is going to need assistance with the process of going from wheel chair to prosthesis.
Dr. said this will take up to a year and a half before he is through with the process.
They are supposed to getting him a motorized wheel chair and transportation to and from doctors and therapy.
He has another month in the hospital.
