I only use vets that allow me to stay during their procedures. Obviously you can not enter the surgical unit for surgeries, but for anything else they are not to take my dog away from me. My current vet is very good with this.

Unless your dog is pretty chubby they should have been able to find the bladder fairly easily. What kind of crystals did they say they had? Also make sure they get as much water as they want. I'm a vet tech and we always tell people to try to increase water intake of animals with urinary issues. Adding water to their food is an easy and cheap help. Oral cranberry supplements (the human ones are fine) may be helpful also.
