Vehicle Insurance

Been with progressive for quite some time. No issues
My dad had to sue Progressive to get his money after a car accident. They didn't actually fight any thing. They hired a lawyer from the next town over who just asked basic question like the date, time, vehicle... basically facts already in all the documents. It was all done to hassel him in hopes he wouldn't sue them.

They wanted to keep my full deductible after a car came through construction baracades and hit me. They said they couldn't determine who the other driver was. They never even spoke to me once. I tore in to 2 people before I finally got one who took my statement and the pictures that identified the driver. I finally got my deductible back after several months of fighting.

We both use different companies now. Just a heads up.

I've been very fortunate!
No accidents in a very very long time thankfully.
The only claims I've have were some years back, one a wind issue and the other a deer. Both paid pretty quickly. That's totally different than an accident involving another vehicle tho.

Riding motorcycles for so many years I tend to "drive" everyone else's vehicle. On a bike you almost HAVE to. Constantly on alert/anticipating what other drivers do etc...

I suppose I've had no reason to shop around. Ain't nobody got time for accidents. Hope it stays that way!!

My dad was hit from beind in the dark and it threw him in to the ditch. He has also ridden motorcycles his whole life.

Good luck with that.

My state farm insurance had gotten to be quite a bit as well. But I traded in my "city" truck recently for something brand new and my premium went down by over $70 a month. I asked my agent and she said they, state farm, runs a soft credit report when opening a new policy. My credit is way better today than it was years ago. Though, how much all that is true, i am not sure.

Edit to add: all my insurance is currently through state farm.

USAA has been as good as one can expect. I have been with them for 20+ years. Paid after any claim in Florida even after the 7 hurricanes we endured.
Then here in TN. Car totalled when a tree hit it. Got less than replacement.
House totalled when that same tree (?) And many others hit it.
Paid out the full value. About 2 times what the house was worth. Plus all the extras. Extra buildings, and contents, lodging after the incident and even paid for an RV to live in while our house was being built. Solid Company so far.

We've had Shelter Insurance for a long time. Can't say it's any better or worse than others. Seems like it's getting a lot higher. In the past we've looked into others and they been comparable, but we were just talking the other day maybe it's time to look around again and get some different quotes.
A few years ago, a car ran through our fence. Driver was insured through Aflac.
They tried to get out of it saying it wasn't their clients fault that they ran through our fence. They said that their client was ran off the road by another vehicle and therefore we shouldn't expect them to pay for something they were not at fault off. The police report did not have anything stated about another vehicle running them out of the road.
They finally paid for damages after we were persistent and told them it wasn't right for us to absorb the cost of the fence repair when another person's vehicle went through it.

These people that work for insurance companies must enjoy being a..holes or they get bonuses for dodging the companies responsibilities.

I've used Progressive, I am now insured by Erie for last several years. Have no real complaints... but yes, it is HIGH.... Also had Farmer's and they got too high so switched to Progressive for several years...

been with Farm Bureau for 25 years...good so far..but they are usually higher, but good if something happens. have heard several times about State Farm.."Snake Farm", that they love your premiums, but fight you when you have a claim. i only have 1 friend who actually experienced this and had to get a lawyer. but have heard bad about Snake Farm for years

I've been with Germania for well over 30 years (home, auto, and farm liability), and while I haven't had many claims I haven't had any issues when I did. Their main office is in Brenham, TX, so I don't know how much country they cover.

In any case, if you do have an issue I suspect you'll get better service with a locally owned company than a national one.

like rafter said.. go with a local broker. i got a few quotes from state farm, progressive, etc.. and it was insane compared to what i'm paying.

Who offers somewhat affordable car insurance?

State Farm is getting even more stupid.
I've been shopping for the last month. Progressive has an online quote that cuts out the local agent and it's the best price I've found. I checked with Farmers and they are better than the independent agent I've been with for years... but read the following.

I got my insurance bill for the house at the beginning of the month.

When I bought this house in '09 I got it cheap and could insure it for "actual cash value" and dictate the amount of insurance I want to put on personal property.

Several years ago I was told that the rules had changed and now if I want insurance I'm required to insure for "replacement value", and any personal property is figured at a percentage of the replacement value. This means that my insurance has gone up five times the original price, and I'm now paying for personal property insurance that is valued at 30K more than I paid for the house. (and I've only bought a $700 couch since we moved in fifteen years ago)

And of course nothing else has decreased in price. I bought this place to downsize and retire to, so that I could eat and sleep in a warm and dry place that I could afford. Of course social security has given me raises but it's nowhere near keeping up.

At this point my house insurance has gone from about 2% of my annual income to 10%. And if it's happening to me... it's happening to a lot of people that are worse off than me.

And here's where the rant kicks in for real. I've been told that the rules changed as though the state was responsible for the change, but I did a little checking around and the state isn't dictating what kind of insurance is required. AND, the insurance company I buy from sells "actual cost value" and even "agreed value" policies. So now I'm trying to determine if it's the insurance company or the agency itself that "changed" the rules.

There may be legal action.

I'll have to make a decision by the end of the month. As pissed off as I am about my present agent I'm very inclined to jump ship and pay someone else for insurance. I've spoken to a lawyer but only over the phone so far. And I'm still waiting on Farmer's to give me a quote on "Agreed value" insurance for my house. They seemed very hesitant about it when I asked. They also confirmed that "replacement value" would be over five times what I paid for the house.

I think I made a post last time about dropping my personal property from my hime policy. It has a bunch of things that don't qualify and caps and hoops to jump through any ways.

I use a local insurance company and they are a pleasure to deal with. They walk you through all that stuff.

On my auto, a lot of the big companies force you to put people under 18 on the most expensive vehicle on the policy. My insurance let you put ehm on the vehicle they actually drive. Its a pretty significant savings.

Yeah, that's another thing I found out, is that the state doesn't require anyone to insure personal property at all or as a percentage of the home owner's policy.

I think there was a minimum I couldn't go below. It couldn't be taken completely off but it could be lowered way down. I want to so the lowest you could do was 20%. It was at like 80% or some thing pretty high amd was adding a lot to the premium. It was especially dumb, imo, because who has 80% of their home value, in valuables, in the home, that it covers.

Tell me about it. All their new app improvements has skyrocketed my premiums and all they can talk about is how much I'm saving with their multi car discounts. I been with them too long, almost 40 years now, they've got me looking else where.

My wife had an accident in July. Not her fault. The other guy's insurance would only pay for aftermarket or used parts even though our SUV only had 18,000 miles on it.
We have Farm Bureau full coverage and they wouldn't make up the difference in new parts. For $6200 in damages we ended up paying almost $1500 for new Mopar parts. We argued with them from July until December and finally just paid for the new parts ourself.
