I was at Rocking P Livestock and Chan Phillips showed me some of their donor cows. This is a bad cell phone picture. If you are interested go to their website for a better picture http://www.rockingplivestock.com/ . This is not a small simangus but she is a valuable one. If you read the thread I started on the Express Angus Ranch sale, you may have seen the economics in that thread as to why some cattle have the market value they do. This one is worth in those $200,000 to $400,000 categories (only for reference, I was not told her value). Half of her belongs to another enterprise. It helps provide cash flow and even out the risk.
This is PCC Queens Valentine R9. I saw her yesterday. She is a donor cow that is induced to superovulate, she is then artificially bred and on day 7 the zygotes are flushed. The zygotes are separated individually and pipetted into a zygote or fertilized egg straw and frozen in a liquid nitrogen tank. A recepient cow is then prepared by a prescribed suite of hormone injections so her uterus will receive a zygote. Thus, this cow can produce hundreds of zygotes which can be placed in recipient cows and generate potentially millions of dollars in zygote (embryo) sales. This cow was the 2006 and 2007 Reserve Champion Percentage Female National Western Stock Show and 2006 Grand Champion Percentage Female North American International Livestock Expo.
It is a small world. While showing me the cow, he said Dr. James Spears is the embryologist who Rocking P employs for flushing. In 1969 Dr. James Spears (same one) was my college embryology professor at Morehead State University. I was told I could come back when he is there later this month and meet him after over 40 years. They said he is still going strong. I guess an embryologist in the private sector is better pay than a college professor. :lol: That's a joke! Dr Spears probably makes 20 times what a professor does. One of my professor friends and I got together about a week ago. He said he has been teaching for over 30 years and is now up to $71,000 a year. Dr Spears is on the American Embryo Transfer Association Board.
