Vaccine Interactions - Lucky_P

Lucky, I was not aware of that IBR interaction you mentioned. Are there anyother vaccine interactions I should watch out for? Also, are there any issues with over innoculation? I probably have vaccinated before the specified intervals on many ocasions due to convenience.
 
No other specific interactions that I can think of, off the top of my head.

More and more attention being paid to heat stress and its effects - dairy producers/veterinarians have long known about the impact on feed consumption and milk production once temps get above... would you believe...about 60 degrees? More work being done recently looking at heat stress effects on response to vaccines.
Anyway, the '85-70 Rule' is one to keep in mind, for beef cattle. If daytime temps are above 85F and don't drop below 70F at night for more than 4 hours at night, cattle will be so heat-stressed that they respond poorly to vaccination - if at all. And, it's not unusual for some to die if you're working 'em in temps above 85.

Had a guy in a couple of weeks back - with a BRD calf; he was telling me about when they were 'working' this group of calves, a few weeks earlier - said the pistol-grip syringe he was using was getting so hot, it almost buned his hand. That hot... he's lucky they didn't kill some of those calves outright; calves likely didn't respond well, if at all - and it may have been so hot that the MLVs were adversely impacted long before they got 'em injected into the calves.

Thank you. I was unaware. I prepare my syringes, mark them with a permanent marker as to serum and how to administer. I use disposable syringes and I pack them in a cooler with those gel ice packs so the serum stays out of light and temperature. Then go to the chute and remove them from the cooler as I use them. BTW, I never, ever use a syringe twice not even in the same cow. That just goes against my personal standards.

Ron, over here the recommended vaccination intervals for small animal vaccines has been extended a fair bit, the manufactures say it is because the vaccines have been improved but the real reason is because the incidence of auto immune conditions such as immune mediated haemolytic anaemia are climbing and there is enough circumstantial evidence to suggest that vaccines are triggering it. Also the number of different antigens in the multivalent vaccines seems to contribute as well.
Doctors are very reluctant to give tetanus boosters these days for similar reasons they are now saying that it has been found that the vaccinations last longer but the real reason is that they want to avoid any problems.
I dare say that similar situation is the same with cattle but not being a family pet except in your case these things don't get noticed.

Ken, thanks. I beed to be more caeeful in light of this!!! It occurs to me that maybe the same mechanism accounts for all the auto immune problems humans have.
 
While it's very important to keep those vaccines - particularly the MLVs - cool AND protected from sunlight, it's perhaps equally important to consider the heat of the ANIMAL. If daytime temps are going above 85 and nighttime temps not dropping below 70 for at least 4 hours, it doesn't matter how good the vaccine is or how well you handle it - immune response is going to be POOR to nil.

We usually recommend using reconstituted MLVs within 45-90 minutes after mixing; sooner is better. But, if you keep the vaccine in a cooler and protected from sunlight in between draws, it may be good for as long as 4 hours.
Just don't do like one fellow I heard of - he mixed all his vaccines the night before working, just so they'd be all 'ready to go' when they had the cows in the pen and moving through the chute.

I wonder why the drug makers do not provide a direction to use vaccines at the appropriate ambient air temperatures? Or a recommendation to vaccinate in early spring and late fall for best results!!! This is my first exposure to this information. I just took BQA for my second time and they do not mention it. I would guess a lot of cows are vaccinated in the ineffective temperature ranges. That is not good news!

This product has been shown to be efficacious in healthy animals. A protective immune response may not be elicited if animals are persistently infected with BVD virus or incubating an infectious disease, are malnourished or parasitized, are stressed due to shipment or environmental conditions, are otherwise immunocompromised, or the vaccine is not administered in accordance with label directions.

That covers the temperature issue. I can understand using a statement like that rather than a specified temperature range. Be difficult establishing specific temperatures to work in. Thanks.

LIke so many others pharma knows not to take the risk of being too specific about things. Do disclose what is required.
