I have a group of 8 holstein bull calves that we weaned off the bucket a month ago . today we vacinated and banded them. We have been having alot of changes in the weather lately , even though they all seem healthy I decided to check temps before vaccinating , all were fine except one was 102.2 , I know that's not really high enough to be too concerned but I wasn't sure so I didn't do him. if he isn't any higher tommorrow should I just go ahead and vaccinate him or should I wait untill it's closer to normal , he seems fine otherwise.
 
Sometimes after vac'ing they get a fever. Read your lable and see if in its trial studies it occured. Mostly in MLV.

I don't see why that would be a problem. It's quite common to see some runny noses and higher temps a few days after vaccinating. Just watch them closely.

Vaccines don't work when the animal is already under stress - ie sick - so if he IS sick, there's no point in vaccinating him until he's well.

Now, I personally would go ahead and vaccinate if he acts fine otherwise. Cows aren't used to being handled and their vital signs are generally going to be anything but normal due to nervousness. Besides the fact, of course, that TPR's are going to vary in individual animals, and that may well be perfectly normal for that calf.

Keep in mind if you were using a MLV like Bovishield Gold, that it has to be used pronto after opening, and so if you were "saving" a dose for that calf, it isn't any good now. I believe it's only good for approx 3 hours after the two vials are mixed.
 
His temp was the same yesterday , I was using a killed vaccine so I was okay, I normally use live vaccine but our Animal Medic guy had open house and I won this vaccine as a door prize , so I thought I would use it up on these calves , I still plan on using live vaccine on my cows and heifers.
