Good evening I'm going to be giving my calfs 7way and vira shield should I give my cows both at the same time ? Any info on what you guys do for a vaccine program would be great ! Thanks curtis
 
I give the calves 7 way shots at around 4 mos., but have not been vacinating the cows. not sure if thats the best way or not but it's worked for several years now.
 
I gave the cows a 7-way this year for the first time at the advice of some on this board. Wasn't any trouble and did not cost much so I guess if it does any good at all it will be worth it.
 
We give pre breeding and pre calving shots. Calves receive vaccinations approx 2 weeks after last calf is born for that season - modified live , again at weaning and again at yearling. Next set are given at breeding/calving seasons.
You may get buy without vaccines for a long time, but sooner or later it will catch up to you, like the farm that didn't think it necessary to vaccinate their AI sire/herd bull - died from pneumonia!! Could have been prevented with vaccine.

We pretty much follow what Vcalvin does. We give our cows the black leg shots every other year. It does two jobs. 1. keeps up the cows immunity, and 2. it keeps the levels up in the colostrum for the babies. This is on the advice from our vet.

The rule of thumb is not to give more than one MLV at the same time, and not more than 2 inactivated vaccines at the same time otherwise you may not get as stronng an immune response as you would have liked. The 7 way usually is an inactivated vaccine and the Viral usually a MLV so you can give them together.

Just to make clear you can give 1 MLV and 1 inactivated at the same time
You can give 2 inactivated vaccines at the same time
you cannot give 2 MLVs at the same time
You cannot mix vaccines in the same syringe and it has to be seperate shots.
If you don't booster at the right time, you might as well not give the first shot.
