Looking to do something different this summer instead of the usual beach trip. I kinda have a hankering to go somewhere fun but not touristy. Thinking about the following states.......Virginia, Mississippi, East Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, North or South Carolina. What is there to do in those areas? Not big into cities. We like state & National parks, agricultural things, good food, outdoor stuff in general. All suggestions would be welcome.

I would suggest Bevers Bend state park near Broken Bow Ok. Also I know it's not on your list, but have you been to Big Cedar Lodge near Branson Mo?

I have been to Branson and have seen the lodge. Some friends of ours over near Springfield, MO have a timeshare that can be used there that they will let us use.....it is an option but maybe a bit touristy for this redneck

The Buffalo National River here in Arkansas is mighty pretty country Hoss. River would be a little low for floating in the summer. Lot of nice cabins in the country out of town but not to far out. White river is full of trout. If you hang out around Harrison it only about 30 minutes to Branson. And i would be a tour guide to show you a few Arkansas Elk.

You might find some fun around Rock HIll, SC. They have the York County Nature Museum that has one of the largest collections of stuffed animals in the world, white water rafting at the river walk recreational complex, Carowinds amusement park - just a skip away, just up the road is Charlotte and they have a good art museum and lots of good eats.

HOSS check out Jefferson in NE Texas. Small town, a lot of history, Caddo Lake, great food and the casinos at Shreveport are just down the road if you feel lucky.

I don't know what could be better for a red neck, I have lived in the area all my life and as much of a redneck as you can find. The thing about it is there is a lot of what you may want to do within an hour of Branson, we use to have a four wheeler ride business on 400 acres in branson if we were still doing that I would give you a free ride.

I guess what I mean by touristy is lots of people :) I am not a big fan of crowds. The area is real nice though and we could probably see our friends up in Springfield. North Arkansas might be a plan as the Ozark National Forest runs all through there. Maybe some fishing, hiking etc. would be the ticket.

I hear ya Bez. My vacation this year will be driving to Missouri to pick up my bull!........of course there is a possibility that it might involve a dead turkey also.

I know what you mean about crowds, if you do make it to north Arkansas, here in my area we are in the middle of the mark twain national forest, there about a 30 mile road thru it here close to me, that I could just go out every day and walk up and down.

Mena, AR is town I live close to. Google that and check it out. Depending on when, and if you pass through this area, we can ride over to Honubia, OK for the annual Bigfoot festival. If you think you're redneck or hillbilly, those people will scare you. Very entertaining though, and you get a "T" shirt :lol2:

I agree with RBB. Every few years we bust out of here and trout fish the White River. We do a 2 day trip where you camp on the island where the Buffalo dumps into the White. It's always been a great trip!

Been to Jefferson Texas last Oct. Crowded, and pretty pricey. Can't say much for their lodging either. Lots of B&Bs there, which we didn't try, but other than that, only 2 motels in town and both were (imo) somewhere between roach motel and Motel 5 1/3.
East Texas is basically full of trees, and if you've seen one pine forest, you've seen 'em all.
When I have visitors, I take them to the San Jacinto Battelgrounds, to tour Battleship Texas and the monument. They all seem to enjoy it.
We went to the Renascence Festival last year in Montgomery County Tx. Never again!

If you like flea market type outings, Canton Texas has one of the biggest, with good lodging available, right off the interstate. Weekend after the 1st Monday of each month.
My next "vacation" is going to be Big Bend--south west Texas.
We try to do our recreational stuff in the fall, when it isn't so dang hot--mostly county fairs and livestock shows.

Check out the Natchez Trace parkway from Nashville all the way to Natchez. Go from Natchez up to Vicksburg and then back up through the delta to Memphis. Lots of history, civil war sites and battle fields, see the Mississippi river and plenty of agriculture. No crowds.

I take it you didnt' stay in the Excelsior House ??

Those are some great ideas guys I appreciate it. I looked online at a cabin on 500 acres a few miles outside of Mena, Arkansas overlooking the Ouachita Mts. The cabin looks really nice and is supposed to be the only one on the 500 acre parcel so it would definetley be out of the crowd :cowboy: It was only 150.00 per night and we would have the run of the 500 acres for hiking, atv riding etc.

I also looked at some pictures of the Ouachita mountains and it looked like some beautiful country.
