Uneasy about Simmental Bull

I brought this bull when he was a yearling, I didn't notice that he had a very wide front end, he actually stands with both front legs wide apart and they match his front shoulders (wide). My question is: I'm going to start calving in Feb. do you think that I'm in for some problems? My cows are coming their 5th calves, they weigh between 1350 and 1600 pounds!
They are around 75% Angus.
This is a reg. homo. black and polled bull. EPD is 4.6 CE.

I wouldn't think mature cows in decent condition would have any special problems. You'll know for sure in a few weeks, though. :P

You might get lucky and the Angus come out that is in him.

I wouldn't think mature cows in decent condition would have any special problems. You'll know for sure in a few weeks, though. :P

Sense there use to that I think they should be ok. I mean maybe young heifers.

with a 4.6 calving ease he should be fine on your cows, don't put him on heifers though, i like a 9.5 c.e. for heifers.

A 1450 pound 5th parity Angus cow should have absolutely no problem with almost any bull out there. With the exception of double muscled cattle or a big bull with a bad pallet head, I have no fear of any bull on a fifth parity cow of that size. Show some pictures of the bull. That there is some distance between his legs is normally an indicator of thickness (a good thing in a beef sire). Unless he is just coarse shouldered, he sounds good.

I agree with Brandomn - unless he has bulging shoulders, it sounds like he has normal width that you would expect with a beef bull. If his shoulders lay in smooth, and he is wide between the front legs, that's good. Pics from the front would be great.
And unless he was open shouldered "freekie", a mature 1350-1600 # cow should be able to calve to almost anything, unless they really are 1100# cows that are super fat. A cow should EASILY calve 8% of her body weight. So a 1500# cow can easily calve a 120# calf. Not that any of us want that size calf.

I guess we are forgetting the old full blood simmental days when we had 1800 pound cows and pulled lots of calves. I normally agree with Jeanne, but have pulled to many calves out 1500#+ cows to make such a blanket statement. Caustic I am sure can predict the out come of a bramer bull on 1400 lb hereford or angus cows, I bet he recommends a good calf jack and a .22 rifle to clean up. Your bull's epd's are fine for your cows, you should have no trouble calving.[/quote]

lol ranchmgr.. no kidding about that! Makes me shudder just to think about it!

I still have progeny out of some of the "old full blood" Simmy cows. Great milkers, but you'll sure get to pull a calf or two.
