Uncomfortable Heifer

Why do they always decide to do this stuff when it is -30 :mad: . Couple days ago this heifer starts acting "off". Carrying her tail up, hump in her back, nervous and kind of staying to herself. If it hadn't been -30 we would have probably left her alone, but since she isn't due til around the 5th of Mar we figured we had better put her in the barn (hard enough keeping a preemie alive when it is warm out). So in she goes with another old cow for a companion. And of course she does nothing. So we kicked her out yesterday morning, since she wasn't showing any other signs. Now missy is waddling around with a hump in her back. We did finally check her out just to see what was going on, and she wasn't doing anything exciting at that time. Calf must be putting some pressure on something!! Hope this nonsense doesn't mean a huge calf or twins (the only time I hate twins is when they are out of a heifer)
At least now the weather has warmed up. It is -2 and snowing (it rained last night)

I am sure you are very experienced, but a heifer walking with her tail up sounds like there is a problem. I take it you have examined her? I'll keep a very close eye on her, good luck.

You must be getting the snow and bitter cold that just left here - you're welcome to it! Good luck with the heifer, those things can be frustrating until they make up thier minds what the heck they're going to do.

Yep, we have checked her. She isn't dialated at all, so we can't do anything about it anyways. By tail up, I mean just up, not way up in the air. I think maybe false labour, have seen it before, but usually closer to the due date. As my husband says, "she's playin' mind games". Will keep you posted with what happens with her.

Yeah, we have had 2 weeks of it. Now it has warmed up, it is melting right now. Positively balmy out!!

Heifers are a lot of fun aren't they. They haven't got a clue what is going on and the like to give out mixed signals ;-) :mad: .

Off to our hockey tournament now.... 2 fun filled days of 10 and under hockey. Fortunately its only 5 minutes away. Then we are booked into tournaments every weekend for the next month. Hubby can do them, I will stay home and calve out cows. The first of them are due on Mar 1.

haven't kept back any heifers for the last couple of years but we're breeding 60 of them this spring - I'll be in your shoes next Feb!

Had one decide to have her first one Tues. night during an ice storm. She was a no-show when I put out some feed, I searched until dark, got covered with ice. Next morning I found her in a stand of cedars and pines with a healthy new haifer at her side.

Ha, we usually are done hockey by calving time. But not this year.

We have about 30 heifers this year. I actually don't mind calving heifers out. I like spending time out with the cattle and that gives me an excuse. Except for those coooold days when I'd rather be inside.

True enough. I am certainly not the best hockey mom. That is what dad is for. He's the team manager, so I can blame all this tournament nonsense on him ;-) :D

I'm sure the heifer will be fine, she is just new to all this.

Congrats on yours, sometimes they are smarter than we give them credit for.

Sounds like you ladies need a glass of that homemade Canadien wine they treated me to when I was in Moose Jaw judging a bird dog trial. I know a jug of that would help at a 10 yr old Hockey tourny. And no headache.

Ha Ha, I've been around that homemade wine. Depends on who was doing the brewing and what they were brewing it from :shock: ;-) , some of it can be downright dangerous.....
