UK Flooding

Was listening to the news with one ear earlier and am sure they said that sand bags were being sold to residents in need. If this is the case surely they should be handed out free in this disaster? Or do I have it all wrong, anybody been following the news?

Sandbags
While local authorities have no statutory obligation to provide material for flood protection, Richmond Council is continuing to review each of the ‘at risk’ areas and are currently adding to sandbag reserves so that those most in need can be supported over the coming days.

The Council needs to prioritise those areas most at risk. When stocks of sandbags are at a level where were can protect essential infrastructure, those identified in the most ‘at risk’ areas who require support will receive sandbags by the weekend (15 February). If you are not in one of those high risk areas, you should also consider measures that you can take in advance to prepare for any flooding. You could buy your own sandbags from builders' merchants, or use growbags, bin liners or plastic bags filled with earth, which can also be effective in keeping water out.Sandbags are not the only form of flood protection equipment.

Our Prime minister has said there will be all the help given to the people that need it money is no object,(not sure where he is getting that from) and the Army is going around helping people to vacate their property if needed or place sand bags down.
Looking at the NEWS and amount of water in most places I don't think sand bags are of much use anyway. The amount of rain we have had recently is incredible, and in a few months time when hopefully the nice weather comes we will be in a drought and have hose pipe bans. Seems a shame they can't contain this excess water and store it for such times. but thats the UK for you.

Our Prime minister has said there will be all the help given to the people that need it money is no object,(not sure where he is getting that from) and the Army is going around helping people to vacate their property if needed or place sand bags down.

UK doesn't have the monopoly on that by a long shot. The river at the far side of my property sometimes comes across the pastures to visit me, and a few months later it is all but dry.

I think you don't get English humour, as they are all the leaders from each political party we have here, and not one of them can be a King Canute and stop the water.

greybeard, I know we don't have the monopoly on flood and drought, many Countries have it worse, but someones broken leg doesn't take the pain away from your finger, just because it is worse, it is what is happening here at the moment, and I just answered alison.
