Two-Stage Weaning

I know this has been discussed here and I ran across this video. It gives me a better idea of how they work. I went ahead and bought some of these blabs/paddles and will try it on mine in a few months.

Works best on calves around 7 months. I use them on 5-month calves and they are still aggressive enough to either suck with them on and get them off. Cows (with that young a calf) are also willing the withstand a little pain from the barbs - not so in cows with 7 month old calves.

A lot of good articles coming out lately about not weaning at all. I think that is the next steep I will take. Leave calves on till they are 10 months old. Already doing it with 3 test cows this winter and I am amazed how they are holding their condition.

I was wondering how it might go if the barbs/spikes were hitting the cow instead of the calf. Would she keep it kicked off?

When I use them I use them with points to the udder. It works well but they will lose them occasionally.
