After 2 days with almost no sleep..and trying to stay awake for another hr to do a calving check.. just a few comments..get a laff out of all these people saying ya got to love twins.We normally only have maybe 3 or 4 sets a yr.Wait till you have about 50% of the calvings born in the last week as twins . want to work you butt off.So far this week I have had at least a dozen sets of twins have lost count (2 sets born dead) plus a set of triplets born dead.everyone always says it good to have twins that way you have extras to put on cows that lose a calf .bullsh!!tt There was not one sets of twins that were both healthy. certainly no extras that were strong enough to foster on a cow. Which I would likely not need if they had only had singles.I have been tubing calves all week long to keep them going as they could not stand for the 1st day or so.till they could be fostered.

I,m going to cull every one of these cows and I am never ever buying cows from the same place, I bought these ones at.

:shock: Dang, Frenchie, I'm really sorry for all the trouble your having this calving season. Since I was one of those people who stated that twins were an extra calf - yada, yada, yada, maybe you could yell at me for an hour to stay awake for the last check? It would be ok with me, and I would understand.

I hate twins I know you would understand :) , but I,m so tired I don,t have that much energy.i was just real pissed off as I lost a single calf to coyotes as I was messing with fostering twins this afternoon.

I am just praying that no more problems tonite.So I can get some sleep

I hear ya. But, but, coyotes don't kill calves - it must have been dogs! :lol: If you didn't live so darned far away, I would be more than willing to come give you a hand. As it is, by the time I got a passport and a flight out, I'm not sure I would arrive in time to be much good. 12 sets of twins in a week? Holy you know what!!! :shock: Here's to a night with no problem calvers - and no more twins!
 
Even though the twin I have has a new mama ,I still don't care for twins. I let them all out of the pens for awhile the other day. Just to graze and exercise. All was going great until the twin decided she liked the mule. That crazy mule chased her around. And I'm running around trying to get the heifer back in the pen. She wasn't going. Instead she went thru the fence. Then the neighbors horse gave chase. That little calf took a flying leap right in the middle of jumping cactus. I grabbed her and got her in the pen. It took awhile to pull all of the burrs out of her. Then I poured some peroxide (sp) on her .
Nope just don't care for twins.

frenchie, that is one bad deal you've got going there. I hope that you have no more twins.

That is crazy, what are the odds of 50% of a herd having twins? I could see where the odds would be good if all a person had were 2 cows for a 'herd', but anything more than 10 cows, that is too much.

Here's hoping you have no more twin or coyote issues for the rest of your calving.

One year we had 3 sets of twins in one day. Ended up with 5 of 6 calves. We only had 30 cows too. Twins are a pain. We have a recip due with twin bulls in Sept. I'll let you know how much I hate/love them then.

What are you feeding them at breeding time? Some really high energy feeds can lead to twins I believe, or synchronizing programs sometimes. So far, we haven't had any twins (we have about 150 calved out so far) and a neighbor has had 9 sets w/ about the same number of cows but he gives Lutalyse until they cycle.
 
Right there with you Frenchie. Twins only work out for the 5% of cows who can handle them, the rest are just problems. We lost a darn good straightbred cow to twins last year, and one of my best up-and-coming young purebreds a month ago to twins (she had one, but the other one wasn't coming properly and she bled out). my husband said "yeah twins are good, better for your profit" I told him shut up he wasn't the one getting up and checking the barn every 2 hrs. Only had one set of twins so far -- heifer born first, dead bull we had to pull, he couldn't walk and his legs were cold to the touch - spent all day every hour pullling him up on his legs making him stand. His mother is a great cow - she let us stand him up - then she would move into position and let her milk down. Then he would lay back down, momma would keep licking him. Around the 8th hour after his birth I was heading to the barn and was happy to see him up and walking right to the "dinner table". He has a perfect white heart on his forhead.

but.....I hate twins also!

sorry - lack of punctuation in the proper place -
heifer was dead - bull lived
we would stand him up every hour - momma would come over to nurse him, he would lay back down.
