Dogs and Cows":21ttctl9 said:All,
I want to ask a question regarding my purchase of some commercial black angus based cattle (black and black white face). These cows are 3-5 yrs old. I have not seen them other than some pictures...but the seller says they need groceries. Some look better than others. I was thinking of purchasing a couple as the price is pretty low ($1250 ea). As you all know, I am building from nothing...and am not "flush" with cash...so I am thinking this may be a way to build my herd slowly and generate some income by breeding them. What are the thoughts here? I will look for the calm cows with good udders, and in the best body condition...is this plan something I should avoid? All comments welcome!!! Thanks for everything!

I buy some bred opportunity girls every year. Never pay more than slaughter price for the cow.
Put some groceries in them and sell the pair. If the cow looses the calf, with some pounds on the cow
you can break close to even plus or minus a few bucks. If they are not bred I wouldn't touch them.
By the time you pay that price get the cow in condition on a maybe she will breed and have a calf you are going to have a lot of nickels in her.
