Wondered who has seen these 004 cattle. They certainly look good and EPD's are stellar. But I don't know of anywhere else that can have frame 6 bulls with 205 wts and 365 wts like that. I know they are managed very well but what do these bulls look like after their 1st breeding season?

It's always intrigues me how we are like sheep, I admire those that make their own path rather than ALWAYS use what the "standard"
is. It doesn't hurt to try them, but doesn't anyone want to be different?

Just curious. Why would it matter what they "looked like" after their first breeding season? What matters is what sort of calves they produced in their first breeding season. We sell some bulls to a producer around here that I hate to claim after breeding season. He works them hard and they look bad. But after a break, they smooth out and he seems satisfied with them because he's come back and bought more.

I use proven bulls, popular bulls, because they have a history of performance and it's easier to sell them than to convince buyers that my way is the right way. I don't think there's any a small breeder like me can promote my animals enough to compete with ABS, Select Sires, Gardiner, Express, etc. But I can use their bulls and piggy back on their promotion and reputation. When it comes to selling females, daughters of unknown bulls take quite a discount compared to a daughter of a proven, well known bull. My bottom line is profit, not blazing a new trail.
 
most bulls ive seen if they are fattened up off rations look really good when you buy em...then after the 1st season turn to crud...we only manage our bulls on minimal feed/and the rest is pasture...they arent pampered and can handle the breeding season without tons of groceries not saying they dont need the right amount though...think thats what they mean frankie
 
What I am wondering rather than a rancher making a bull earn his keep. Are these SAV bulls burned out or can they bounce back. If they can bounce back they aren't burnt out. I understand regarding using the proven bulls, but I figure that means using bulls that are over 10 years of age as then we know what they can do in regards to their daughters, sons and problems that take time to sort themselves out. By using a 5 year old bull with .99 accuracy doesn't tell the whole tale to me. That just means his bwt and performance are accurate. We all know there are bulls with excellent numbers but aren't worth a damn. I know what it's like to run a small herd we will now calve 58 head (pending deal). I have to market them as well and it's not easy. Good cattle always find their way out. I find being smaller that I need to do something
different to establish myself as an alternative rather than the mainstream.
 
Don't know much about how they hold up, but they do have quite the customer base and I would guess that if they wouldn't hold up, the customers wouldn't come back like they are.

Now with that said, my Dad saw Travelor 004 yesterday at Hawkeye West, and he said he is very impressive. Really long and very thick and deep in about a 6 Frame or so. We like power bulls so if he said he was good, that means their is alot of performance in him. He thought he was the best black bull out there.
