As I have stated that we are out of grass and probably going to sell some commercial heifers, and cull some cows. I have an opportunity to run some cattle on a guys place that has a few cattle but could run a ALOT more. he would prefer to trade some calves rather than rent, he is building his herd. has any of you ever done this or know someone who has. Thanks

We've never done this, but I've heard of it. Pasture is rented for X amount of dollars, calves bring X amount of dollars each - bill is paid by the number of calves that it takes to satisfy the bill. The sticky part is determining what sets the value of the calves (the land rental is set by the owner, and the rentee either accepts it or looks elsewhere) - the owner or the prices at the salebarn - if the salebarn, todays prices, the prices at weaning time, or an average of both. If the owner, what is the justification for the prices.
