Got a "good deal" on a 730 Case gaser. Sounded good till I changed oil to 30 weight detergent. Now it pounds for about 1 second after a cold start... Talked to a local shade tree mechanic - - and he said switch to non detergent oil and let her buck. Any other ideas on the source of this issue or how to handle it?

Switch back and you may find it makes the same noise all the time. The dtergent oil may have cleaned some crud off the valve train. And that dame crud may be clogging the screen on the oil pump pick up. Causing a temp stavation of oil. Id pull the pan if poss without splitting it and see if the pick up screen is clogged.

Pull the coil wire and see if the oil pressure will come up from just the starter cranking the engine for a brief time. Make certain that you replace the oil with a straight 30 wt., not a multi viscosity. Also, install a new oil filter as the one on the engine could be clogged now. I like to open old filters to see what is in the filter media.

I'd make sure that you got the correct oil filter for it, or if it is seated right. The right valves in the spin on filters make a big difference on start up.

Does this do more than just buying a higher viscosity oil?
yes it coats all moving parts and keeps them lubricated until you have oil pressure
Lucas is one of the best products out there IMO

I have seen it - - poured like cold syrup. Where do you use it?

Add it to the oil. Lucas is a good product, might be a little thick for your winters. Here I use 1qt. Lucas to 1gal. oil.

we have used it for yrs from Texas to Wisconsin
in your area I would use no more than 1qt pr 2 gallon of oil in the winter
I have been told to pour it into the engine while it is warm and running in cold weather

In the winter, I use the Synthetic Lucas, flows much better in cold temps. I use Lucas in most everything, transmissions, differentials. I was always skeptical of additives, but all the Lucas products I have tried work great.

What benefits do you see from Lucas?

The stadium they're sponsoring for us hoosiers.

Lucas has some really good products, but...I'll raise the objection that any oils which meet manufacturers specs will keep any warrantee in effect. The owner willing to pay for Lucas products is probably a conscientous owner who is going to get 300,000 miles from a modern vehicle using "generic products which meet specs". Will that owner get 400,000 miles using Lucas products? Maybe, maybe not.
I have used the "diesel fuel treatment" from Lucas, and it didn't do any harm.
