For towing goosenecks aournd 16-20 foot and weighing around 9-12k, is there a noticable difference in handling between a 158" and 142" wheelbase?

Probably not a NOTICEABLE difference. But, the shorter wheelbase will be a little better in the maneuvering and turning departments.

A friend bought a new Toyota pickup and put the gooseneck stock trailer he had been pulling with his Superduty behind it. I asked him if the Toyota pulled as good as the Ford and his answer was "Yea, but stopping it was a big problem."

In this case I don't see a gnat's ass worth of difference, but what the shorter wheelbase gains in maneuverability, it gives up in ride quality. I just rode home an hour and a half in a 140" wheel base daycab single axle with an empty dropdeck, at around the hour mark I was taking a shine to those big long sleeper trucks that I passed going up the mountain. They've got to be more comfortable than that buckboard I was in!
