Tough times on the farm

My boss is having some REALLY tough times right now hes the owner of a small Centennial dairy farm and in the past two weeks hes had some things that he has no control over happen first milk prices have been down since feb of last year (below the break even point) then the most used tractor on the farm broke down he took it to john deere it was going to be $17000 to fix it (in working condition its worth $20000) now theres contagious pneumonia going through the herd it has killed 24 (5 per day) so far with no end in sight most of the cows are not producing any milk and the vet said they probably never will again even if they get better last week at this time we were milking 78 cows a day now we are milking 25 to 30 and he might lose the farm if things dont start getting better soon (he has insurance but they wont pay for this)
 
Hunt some baytril and draxxin. Fast. And find a mechanic. May be cheaper than the dealership. Good luck. Hope things get better.
 
The vet said he had never seen anything like this before and that it would be the worst train wreck hed ever seen by the time its done a different vet said that giving them antibiotics wouldnt help but we have been giving them naxcel it only seems to make them die slower the first cows to die died in 15 minutes from the time you could tell something was wrong the rest of the cow have taken hours its just hard for my to belive that a week ago every thing was fine now i (and the rest of the people that work there) might need new jobs i feel real bad for my boss. The vet also said there is nothing we possibly could/can do that we haven`t done already
 
That's horrible.. Yes, find a mechanic, no doubt can be done for a third of the price. For the cows, well, I have no suggestion.. Has the weather been miserable? If it's nice out, perhaps if you can kick them outside as much as possible on the nice days at least it would reduce contact between them...

Really sorry he has to deal with this.

As far as kicking them outside he wont do that atleast not yet there has not been any sick cows outside yet and we are trying to keep it in the barn but last night when i feed the heifers two didn`t get up to eat so i guess i will see tonight if its got out of the barn yet

If it's pneumonia he better give them some good antibiotics and fast. I'd give every one that could possibly be exposed a shot of baytril and a shot of draxxin. Or you can just let them keep dying. I wouldn't wait or worry about overuse. IMO, this very situation is what antibiotics are really for.
 
Baytril is illegal for dairy cattle over 20 months I believe so if they are cows that would be out. Baytril anyway would not be my drug of choice. Are you guys able or know how to IV?

my boss can give IV but none of the employees
 
The first day it was found out about all the cows got vaccinated now there are some that are completely fine i think they will make it but almost all the sick cows will die thats pretty much what the vet said to
 
I was kid in the 80's, but I remember it well. It changed my way of thinking permanently. Not far removed from growing up in the depression.
 
Sounds like a tough time a friend of mine had with blackleg in his dairy herd several years back. I hope you guys figure something out. That really sucks.
 
Only 2 cows died today making the total 32 there are a few more that will probably die but for the most part it looks like its coming to an end

No cows outside died yet there are some that are dopey but it doesn`t really look like the same thing
 
Being dairy makes it a lot tougher. Draxxin could of cleaned that up real quick.
Sounds like the barn needed ventilated.
Always have trouble with pigs in the winter time when we can't vent enough air.

Can you not give draxxin to dairy cows, save their life, and sell as slaughter cows after the withdrawal period? (As long as you don't milk them?)

i don't know about the draxxin thats not a drug we use or one that the vet suggested we have been giving excel and naxcel

as far as ventilation goes the barn is pretty well ventilated it gots two big doors that are open and ventilation fans all along the wall the air is all fresh (not in the winter but it has been for a couple weeks now) and moving
 
I'm no vet but they one you have let 32 cows die .. I'm not sure I'd be listening to him about his sugestions.. I'd save the cow and sell her for slaughter after the allotted time period for the drug.. jmo
 
i lost count i guess because we counted neck chains and we have 36 dead but only one died today we were happy that it was only one ( you know its not good when your happy because just one died) id be surprised if we had more then about 4 more die (those are the ones that are sick but they might get better)
