Well, it is spring time in the poplars. Best bear hunting to be had is on the cut lines - they love that green grass. Looks like a little pest control is in order.
Went for a nap on the White Mud pasture north of Peace River a couple of years ago and when I woke up Mr. Griz was about 50 yards from me - watching me while I slept. Trusty .338-.06 in hand, I backed out of there. Cowboys were ticked I let it live - cost the folks about 8 animals that summer until someone took it down.
The blacks did a lot of damage to our oats fields - so I practised the triple S a lot that summer. Figure I put a dozen in the coulee behind the house. Might be a good idea for you as well. The darned things will come right into your yard if there is no big dog around to keep them away.
Do not leave them in the cut line - bears love to eat bears.
Problem is the blacks are so numerous and the population is growing in leaps and bounds - especially in some parts of your area. Can't hardly go a day in some parts of your world without seeing them.
Tell her to keep her eyes open.

That bear was pretty hard to see. But it is a bear never the less. I think I would drive my children to school for now on. I think this is kinda scary.

Hopefully, another way can be found besides the cubs having to starve to death, but if not, you have to do what you have to do. Thank God, you and your wife that your daughter is careful and got the hell out of dodge! Good girl! I think I'll stick with Charlie the lonesome cougar. At least he runs when he sees people.

I think this is the thing to do. It's better not to take any chances. I sure would hate to walk up on her in the dark.

I wouldn't fault you for putting those down. I drive all the way to northern Maine from Alabama once a year to hunt bear. I have saw the problems these bears can become. Bears that are not afraid of humans can be dangerous. Much less one with cubs. I once killed a bear and was waiting to be picked up. It was well after dark and a sow and 2 cubs can into the bait site. The cubs smelled the dead bear and climbed a tree near me. The sow kelp bluff charging me with teeth chomping and popping. I didn't shoot her but I'll admit my fingers never left the trigger guard and I held a deathgrip on my flashlight. This went on for at least 30 minutes. I was hunting near a public dump and those bears didn't have the least bit of fear of me. Maybe they are not problem bears and were just passing through. When you bring the safety of your kids into the picture it changes the prospective. Heck, they make good eating. Most of the people up there just throw the meat away. I cooked some for them the way we do a old buck and they loved it. I told them if it was dead in the south we would find a way to cook it. I made a lot of bear gumbo out of my last one.
