I hear you. Been wrestling the last while with the idea of contracting my calves. But agree, hard to sell something that doesn’t exist. I’d like to educate myself a bit on hedging with the futures market, but that makes my head hurt every time I try.

Seems like a put option would limit losses but not interfere with profits. But I don’t fully understand the process.

Some of the problem is being able to get out of the position. Margin call on a large position can be a huge financial hardship. The only people always making money are the brokers selling the product. As the saying goes ''roll high and sleep in the street''.

Futures down but still made some money on the steers. Grass heifers that will be opens from our breeding heifer sold very well.

I like the very honest description of the cattle. It gives the buyer a good chance to figure if there top bid will work. Good job on a good sale!
