Kenny every Monday I watch Winchesters sale and seems as they are down .30 on calves since last week. They normally sell 40 or so bred cows every week well today they were busting at the seems and they had a good 75+ breds. The bred prices haven't really changed nor the slaughter cattle. I saw some 595lb bull calves that sold for 1.67lb I think we are in on a slippery slope for a while. I got calves I planned on selling in November but i dont want to give them away so I may winter them.

I didn't get much bought today because the junk calves I like were just not there. Highest I gave today was 2.40 for a 290 lb bull calf. There was a couple calves that were just so bad I would not bid. Thats pretty bad. :lol2:

:lol2: I mean how much further can the calves drop is what im wondering. I am going to my barn to see if I can find some deals this week.

Usually when I see something I like I just buy no matter if the price is going up or down. I figure I have done well the last couple years and maybe this will just be a bump in the road and it wont drop much farther.

They were pretty cheap in Dickson TN today. They sold some red and yellow steers weighing from 475 to 525 that were weaned and shots for between 2.15 and 2.20. Some 750 lb replacement quality heifers dropped below 1.80 today and harder 7 weight heifers down to 1.60. Had several heifers weighing around 450 at 2.20 and some cheaper. Breds were steady but only had around 10 head but kill cows seemed about 5 cents back from what they were on Saturday.


They also sold a bunch of pretty nice 250 lb calves from 2.40-2.60 that seemed to cheap

Kt whats your thoughts with prices dropping like they are? Do you think its just a bump in the road like you mentioned, or a bad sign of things to come?

Im still buying but only a few a week. My bull calves last week weighed 353 and cost me 2.70. Heifers weighed 352 and cost 2.40. Nothing even close to that today.
Each government report that comes out seems to hurt the market but the stock market falling so bad the last week or so has really hurt the cattle market also. The numbers haven't changed, the demand hasn't changed, just the price.
Thats not much of an answer but I am going to keep buying a few each week. I am buying them small enough that if I have to keep them till spring it will be ok?

Depends on the week. Usually at least 20 I would guess. They usually aren't that cheap though. I bid on a couple today but with the market the way it is I couldn't find anybody that would buy any if I would have got some.

Sure glad I didn't hold many heifers back. Lots of folks that were giving $2,000. for heifers are going to be hurting, unless slaughter prices stay strong. And you guys that buy calves better have plenty of cheap feed and hay. No one seemed to make a big stink out of the COOL deal, and now the prices have been falling steady. Our government is trying to put us out of business.

Checking the prices today looks like average price drop was .11-.20 lb down from last week.

Market report from sale at Graham, TX said "Receipts were 1410, including 294 packer cows, bred cows and pairs, 1196 yearlings and calves. Packer cows were steady. Packer bulls were steady. Market on bred cows and pairs were steady on the better quality cows. Market on steers and heifers weighing 500# and under were $7 to $12 lower. Feeder steers, bulls and heifers weighing over 500# were $10 to $15 lower. The market was cheaper today due to the board being lower every day last week and also today."

If they keep dropping may be the time to stock up on some and winter them. However, You have to be able to get a good deal on them.

KT - I went to blackstone prices for graded were way down. I left there the same weight as I came didn't have but a few small calves but the freaking bottle calves were a few hundred bucks and im not paying that for those. I will probably keep going back but seems as people are starting to hold calves back and aren't selling.

We had a special sale here tonight and only a handful of calves under 500 lb showed up. Lots of 750-850 though. Some over 1000lb. These were preconditioned calves and actually sold better than I thought they might. Still they were .20 less than a month ago.

Well im not sure they will winter them here but its just August and we have lots of grass so most people are in no hurry to sell. I am gonna but several more and also wean my calves in mid October for a December sale. I will vaccinate and precondition them and put them on a special sale.

I want mine gone in November if they stay where they are I can let them go but if they go down much more I will keep and sell in spring. I am anxious to see the prices Saturday since the stock market went back up to see if the prices go up.
