Today's drive

Today I took my service truck where no service truck has gone before.. wasn't much more than a quad trail
Gained 2300 ft elevation in 1.2 miles, for an average grade of 22%.. there were a lot of sections much steeper, and the camera really doesn't show it

HOLY S**#. The uphill was something... the downhill had to be OMG.... I can do uphill, downhill scares the SH!T out of me...

The lack of a lot of trees makes it even worse. Be careful cause one wrong move and there will be no Nesikep.

I can’t tell from the hood, what’s your service truck?
2004 Chevy 6.0 5 speed. It does remarkably well.. it would be undriveable with an auto though

This is a pic from this winter, can just see the road I was on through the trees

It was actually kinda fun, didn't fear for my life anywhere, but I sure wouldn't want to do it with snow on the ground

I can put all the downhill into a video (much shorter vid) if you want
I hope it was for something worthwhile Nesi.

Weld up a track pin that was coming out and tighten a couple track pads...
Better to do that now before the track comes off, because that would really not be any fun trying to get it back on up there

We have a lot of "roads" like that. We installed some water troughs. When driving out B said said his window was dirty and we were driving into the sun. He was having trouble seeing. Said he must be doing OK because we hadn't jumped out. I looked out my window and all I could see was down. It would have been suicide to jump.

That's Fraser Canyon looking country.. very similar with the sagebrush, bunchgrass.. it's what it looks like around here if there's no water.
This is just north of town, across the river is one of the steepest railway grades in north america.. it's a LONG way down to the river!

It is about 25 miles to Farewell Bend. That is where the Oregon Trail leaves the Snake River. There is a good reason they left the river. It starts turning into a steep canyon. A short distance down stream is the start of Hell's Canyon. I forget how deep it is but like you said it is a long ways to the bottom.
Imagine those old gold rush miner venturing into those places on foot. They were some extra tough individuals.

These are two issues I'm having with my excavator. I split the tracks a few years ago to rebuild a seized track adjuster cylinder and when I put the master pin back in it went in a lot easier than I thought it should have and now is quite loose. I was going to take the track in and get a new link put in there and new pin but never thought about welding it. Do you weld both ends of the pin? I guess it is just a matter of grinding off the welds if you need to split the track down the track?
I have a couple of loose pads as well but to date have not had much success tightening them with a 3/4 drive socket and big cheater bar. I guess you use a big impact driver to do the job, do you apply a bit of heat to them as well?

I my experience you don’t tighten loose pad bolts very often, you replace them.

Do your master pins have a keeper bolt in them?

No Silver, they are an interference fit and should be tight on the outer links but as it was not tight and been moving in the link it has flogged out the hole a bit more to an oval shape. Inner link has the movement on the bush.
