Fed cattle at home and unloaded a load of bought hay. After lunch we sorted one bunch of cows into two to better match feeding requirements, then fed them. Hay truck is moving hay from one of the other places to home,

FSA is saying these fire burned fences are costing $6.00 a foot to replace. That is $31,680 a mile. I know you can get it done cheaper than that but still $15,000-$20,000 a mile.

Most places around here are 5 strand. There's a fella at the sale this coming Saturday does a lot of fence. I've heard him talk a bit about what he charges, but I've always done my own work so I couldn't say.

Material alone for a mile of 4 strand barb wire is around $4,000. And of course it depends on the ground. The rougher the ground the more of it is hand labor as opposed to using machines.

A well built log fence is maintenance free for 20 years unless a tree falls on it. Replace top logs and blocks about then and it will last another 20

Maybe Lodge pole pine. Lodge pole corrals around here last for years.

Sometimes I envy your guys dry climates and dry soils.

Here that fence would sink into the clay and rot away from the bottom within a year or two. Then the snow covering it completely for 4-6 months would rot out the top.

Pine, best cut in winter when sap is down and two sides peeled. Even better is fire killed.
