Does anyone know if anything like CO-OP Grip Spurs are made anymore? I haven't seen any since the Gold Kist stores closed around 2000 or so I think...(may have been in the 90's). I am sure some tire company made them for Gold Kist...does anyone know who?

My understanding is that they are now back in production. And are being manufactured by gateway .
If you are looking for a similar tread I m radial rather then bias ply the cooper stt and several other brand names of the similar design are available.

Yep. Co-op Grip Spurs. The only tire for a teenage redneck hillbilly in Arkansas.

When I was young, our co-op had a man with one arm missing from the shoulder and a peg leg from a knee down. He could swap tires as fast as anyone.

No where near the same pattern of a Grip Spur but I have had really good service out of Mud Claw MTX tires as a more affordable option. FWIW

I remember spending the night at my Grandmother's house when I was a kid as she lived off of a highway. I would lay there at night and listen to the pick ups that came by with the heavy treaded tires. I used to love to hear that sound at night.

All the Super Dutys I have owned were 7.3 Powerstrokes, 99-03. These had 16" wheels. I think it was 2005 when they went to bigger wheels. And you can't buy a 16" wheel for anything after 2005. Oh well, it was exciting to see they still made them!

For running in snow nothing beats the old LT235-85R16 tires. I am unimpressed with the LT275 tires that my 2012 F350 runs on other than they are great on the highway.

No, this 2012 I just bought is a 6.2 gas. But yeah, people put Grip Spurs on 3/4 and 1 ton trucks up til Gold Kist closed. Back when I worked there in 77 and 78, the 9.00 x 16 and 7.50 x 16 were load range D, though.

A lot of things have changed since then. I haven't see a tag for those tires but I can't imagine the had the speed and weight rating for trucks now days. That's probably why they aren't made any more.

D would be like an 8ply. The newer trucks are mostly coming with Es. You need height and width to get those higher weight ratings. That's part of the reason the new trucks are so tall. They have to clear the large tires for the weight they are rated for.

Warren... Why are you looking for tires that were discontinued years ago? Aren't there any alternatives you can use?

It's a nostalgia thing, I guess. Plus they were the best off-road tires around. It is kinda like I go to car shows, and see '69 Z28s, 70's model Chevelles, Challengers, Mustang GTs etc. And people talk about how these remind them of their youth, etc. And these cars will have radial tires and wheels the same size. This is NOT how they looked back then, First thing you did when you got one back, then, was put air shocks on it, and L 60's on back, with D 70's on front. And an 8-track player under the dash, with a pillow between the bucket seats for your ole lady to sit on!

Yeah, and I think it also had to do with getting bigger brakes on them, too. Tire height isn't so important, the 450's and 550's all had 20" wheels with low profile tires that weren't very tall. Most people ran 12,00 x 15s on their lifted half ton trucks, 7.99 x 15 if they weren't. And a lot of Jeep owners put 16" wheels on them so they could run 7.5 x 16 Grip Spurs on them. I found some 5-lug 16" Ford wheels one time, and I bought them for $75 . (a lot of money in 1976) to put 7.50 x 16 Grip Spurs on my '71 F150. Ended up trading them to guy for his half-cab Bronco. He gave me a '69 Sunburst Strat and a 1/4 lb of Acapulco Gold for them. :)

Absolutely right. You just described my '64 GTO.

But I run Yokohama Geolandars since 2000. I've put them on 5 pickups and have never worn out a set. Also never had any problems. They are light, great in snow and rain, and are ten ply so they can take some off road abuse. And they aren't pricey like a lot of more popular but less capable tires.
