Have you got an action you prefer? Do you reload?

Billy Stevens is one of the best: http://www.stevensaccuracy.com/

He's pretty near me, so if you need some help, let me know.

Good choices. Stock builders are backed up about 6 months though.........

I would suggest to go ahead and try the 22-250 Ackley Improved. It'll give you about another 100 yards of distance over the regular 22-250.

Decide what grain bullets you will shoot so that you get the right twist.

Why bother with the Ack. Improved when you can do the same thing with a Swift. There's a lot more loading data for the Swift

The 220 Swift is a fine cartridge no doubt. I prefer the 22-250 AI over it in a short action rifle.

The loading data is pretty much interchangeable and there is better brass to be had for the 22-250. (Lapua, Norma, etc.)
I'm getting about 100-150 fps more velocity (safely too!) out of my AI than a buddy of mine can get out of his Swift with the same bullets.

I suppose some people like apple pie and some like peach?

Mike C is right, Billy Stevens is one of the best. He has done alot of work for me , He's installing two barrels for now, one is a 280 Ack. imp. with a Shilen barrel, the other is a heavy 308 Win. with a Hart barrel both on Remington 700 actions.

When I developed the loads for my Ack Imp and the Swift I used an Ohler PBL. Both rifles were built on Mauser actions so length wasn;t a big deal. The Swift bested the Ack Imp by a little less then 100 FPS at the same pressures but the accuracy was better with the Swift. The barrel/action work was done by Bullberry Barrel works on both. I did all the rest myself on the Ack Imp and a friend of mine and I jointly did the work on the Swift.

why not a 22-6mm. (6mm remington necked down to 22) i love mine its just a cheep charles daly (mauser action) black synthic stock. bought the gun new for about $300.00 and had a local gunsmith reamer out the chamber. it started as a 22-250. the barrel is a slow twist 1/14 so i havnt tried the heavy bullets. they like a 1/7 twist.this is the same as a .224 tth.but all my rifle budies say i am a oddball.

I ain't never built nothing but AR15's. I really like the LMT stuff.

You might also talk to your gunsmith about a 22/BR or 22/BRX same kind of numbers as the other 2 mentioned here but with less powder and VERY GOOD accuracy. Twist rate depends on what you wanna shoot at most of the time. If you are looking for long range shooting in the wind go fast twist(1-8) with 80gr bullets if not go slow and shoot the 40-50grainers real fast either way spend the money on a Krieger barrel and scrimp somewhere else. The biggest reason I would reccomend the 22BR is you can shoot a lot more rounds with a lot less throat wear than the Swift or the 22-250AI. I also personally don't like reloading the Swift, hate those super long necks. The 22BR should also be a little more inherently accurate than the other 2. Just my 2 cents. By the way don't discount using a Savage action there is a lot of built in accuracy there and not real high priced.

Its been many moons now, but while shooting competition I built a .308 off of a 700 action, 7/8" BB with a 1 in 14 twist, fajen stock, and canjar trigger. All toped with a 6X18 burris hi-lume. Shure was a sweet lil thing.  Got stole though. I found it about a year and a half later in a pawn shop a state away. Anyway my 2 cents on the parts.                                                        Mac

If you try 40s in the Ack Imp you either need to shoot solids or not expect to get many holes in the target. Most 40s won;t hold up to the velocity and you'll see grey steaks through the scope and find little pieces of copper out in front of you.

Thank's dun do you have any suggestion's?And also do you perfer a moly coated bullet or a noncoated one?

rattler

The last time I messed with the coated bullets. the second time they became the new big deal, there were still a lot of problems with them. I'm old fashioned, just a good quality non-coated bullet works fine for me. A quality matchgrade barrel, properly chamberd, crowned and broken in will work wonders. I keep the 50s and lighter to the 218 bee (and mashburn bee), 22 hornet (and K-hornet).The 219 Donalson I use 50s and 555s the 22-250, 220 Swift and the Ack Imp when I had it I stuck pretty mcuh with the 55s. There was a guy, 20 years ago, that made solid 17 cal and 22 cal bullets. The solid 22's seemlike were 39 grains or something, they held up real well in the Ack Imp. The 17s solid 17s were the only thing that held up in the 17 Flintstone Super Eye Bunger (22-250 necked down to 17). The biggest problem with the solids is that to get mcuh weight you run into excessive length and then you need the really fast twist to stabilize them.

There may have been some significant improvements since the days I messed with the hotrocks. I haven't paid much attention to the goings on in the 22 bullet development arena. I have what works for me and I've been satisfied so I just keep doing the same things.

I have a .223 that I had built to shoot 40 grain bullets. They will push 4000 FPS. It's a lot cheaper to load than a 22-250 and a dream to shoot.

If you're gonna shoot 40's I would go with either that, or a 22-BR as someone else mentioned. The BR is a standard bolt-face and you could also make a switch-barrel gun with another barrel for a 22-250.

Just a little hint. Those 40's won't get you nearly enough distance when the prairie dogs get a little skittish.

Mike i aint dead set on the 40's just thinking out loud.trying to listen to the folk's that have built their own rifle hopefuly learn from you feller's I hope all of you know how much i appericate the word's of wisdom.Thank's
