Started cutting down hackberry trees today for feed. Cows like the leaves. I've done it before and it doesn't seem to hurt anything. They'll pick the tree clean. Hope it rains soon.
 
I've been known to take down Paradise trees and use as feed.

I hope you all get some regular rainfall soon.

I imagine within a few years that severe drought will move its way east to where we are. Just a matter of time.

That got me thinking, about ten years ago we had to cut down shoemack trees about thirty a day for a full summer out of the woods on our place because we didn't have any grass, I was glad to see 'em go anyway and the cows just love eating their leaves.
 
This past year has been the driest it has been in a long time in my part of the world. We too had to start cutting down Port Jackson trees ( a horrible alien plant from Australia) to substitute the complete absence of grass. However since May we've had one of the wetter winters I have experienced in my 30 years on the planet. Hope your ituation changes soon.

I just wonder whether the Australians on this forum ever uses their Port Jackson trees for this purpose? Is POrt jackson trees a problem down under or is it just here in the Western Cape of sunny South Africa?
 
Its also very dry up here in NC MN. We have several hundred acres of hardwoods on the farm mainly Aspen and Oak. The leaves normally start dropping in the End of Sept, and earlier in dought conditions. Anyway cattle love the fresh fallen leaves. I'm hoping to get a few weeks of feed for the cowherd this way. 8) :D
