Tiller

Help Support CattleToday:

If you can find an old howard gem walk behind you will not find a better machine. Here is one of mine. I have five of them. Skip to 40s to see it.

No expert on tillers by any means, but from my experience on real tine tillers I like the ones that the cutters go the same direction as the wheels turn. I had one that the rear tines cut backward as I usually ended up about pushing it through the row.

I have seen a couple Troy-Bilt rear tine tillers go pretty cheap at auction as people just don't use them like they once did. Might keep your eyes open and get one of those that want break the bank.

Troy-bilt Horse Rear Tine Tiller 8HP - $550 THis was 4-sale on Craigs List a while back...

Just search for bcs tiller. I think originally they were imported. These type tractors are used a lot in Europe for small farms.

I've got one of those in the garage parents ordered it in the early eighties probably. It has been a fine machine. Stopped using it then started gardening again and had some work done on it. The last time I used it it ran good engine wise but the mechanism that engages the tines kept slipping. Bought a Husqvarna tiller a few years ago that is crap but after some work it is currently running. I have heard from others that the BCS ones are the best now a days.

This is the same tiller I have. Bought it off craiglist for $70 about 15 years ago and put about $100 in repairs at a small motors shop a few years later replacing some bad gaskets. When I loaded it back up the guy told me he bet this thing just chews up turf as they don't make them this heavy anymore and I could probably sell it for what a new one costs. Told him for being out under $200 total on it no way I am selling it because even a new $500 tiller is not going to do the job this thing will do.

Here's my restored 1950's Ariens with a Wisconsin (I think) engine on it.. no belts, all gear, clutch and chain drives.. Paid $200 as a basketcase and probably put $400 into it with new tires and such.. weighs a freaking ton
