Can you use a 3 year old full grown bull to breed heifers (talking Angus bull, Angus cross calves). Or when breeding heifers do you have to get a young bull that is not to large in size?

I would be a little afraid of using a 3100++ pounder; but most mature bulls can cover heifers just fine. The important thing is their birth wt, birth wt EPD, and Calving Ease EPD (if the breed has one). With cattle he is not up there long enough to do much damage to a heifer who is 65% of her mature weight or better. In hogs on the other hand, where "the act" can take ten minutes or more, we try to match younger boars with gilts.

Depends on the bull and the heifers, I don't feel right putting a small heifer under a 2400-3000 pound hard charger...we use a bull for two seasons and sell him as a long two year old as soon as the cows are settled. Have a small operation so want to get him sold while folks are still needing bulls.
