Thoughts on this bull calf

Is it just the way he's standing or does he always dip in the topline like that? His best feature is his depth of rib from that angle
 
Good size, flesh, substance of bone, depth, length and thickness. His rear legs appear to trail too far behind him
rather than being squarely under him and seems it's causing a reverse tilt in his pins to hips and making him a bit easy
in the loin, which may become more pronounced as he ages. Overall he has more good going for him than bad.
Edited to agree with SPH that his body depth appears to be his best feature.
 
Seems to have extra leather in the brisket, head does not say "bull", sway to back and post legged unless angle is bad. Left front knee looks bigger or swollen. Has he been with a creep feeder? Lot of volume for that age.
 




I pulled these two photos that were taken back in December of the same calf. I am seeing the dip as well.

Comparing these pictures of him to what I've seen you post in the past of other bulls, he's not my favorite. From the picture, he doesn't seem as powerful or masculine as others. But, seems some bulls go through a bit of an awkward or rangy stage so I retain the right to change my mind later. :)

Just the midsection in general but the more I look at the picture I've noticed he does shallow up a little in the flank although hard to tell if that's because of how stretched out he is standing.
 
My thought is that with the quality herd that you have, I'm know that there are better specimens available lurking around there somewhere. If he were mine, I wouldn't like him and I'd steer him.
 
I have to say this isn't the best photo and I realize the calf isn't perfect but I have to disagree about steering him I like the calf and think he will develop into a pretty nice bull. Time will tell.

I'd like to see more spring of rib and rear quarter development ... but 6.5mo is not the best age to be making any sort of permanent decisions about a bull calf you're considering keeping around.
 
If I critique three or more negative traits about a breeding specimen - they are down the tubes right there. You should be rigid and non-condescending when selecting breeding stock!
1- Too fine boned
2- Weak top line
3- Lacks masculinity

I'd like to see him in a little more natural pose and more direct profile instead of quartering towards. Looks like a nice calf and would make a better bull than a lot we see on here. What's the breeding on him?
 
solely based on that one picture, I would cut him, but only because I think he could make an amazing show steer. Not crazy about his masculinity at this age, but I think he's a well made calf. He's going to go through a lot of changes over the next 6-9 months for sure...
 
If y'all think I would cut this calf at this stage you have to be smokin crack! But I asked so I will just say thanks for the comments and we will give him some time to get weaned and see how he progresse. Jake he is a Coleman Charlo out of a New Day that is a ET daughter of our old Elluna 0168 cow that was a direct daughter of Elluna 97. The 0168 cow was not pretty but she was sure a good one we flushed her where we could keep her genetics in the herd. Again she would never win a beauty contest but she left us with multiple daughters that have achieved pathfinder status, they work.
 
We're all guilty of wanting an animal to be something its not at times. Especially if it had proven breeding behind it, and we put in the time anticipating it.

That's all I'll say on it.
 
Lack of masculinity will haunt you the most on this calf besides other comments. But you win a gold star for today on optimism! :clap:
