Likely preventable. Her environment & naïveté lead her to believe she was invincible. Don't know the gun laws in Iowa but had she been armed the outcome could have been decidedly different. FWIW, saw on a Facebook page yesterday the recommendation to carry a can Wasp Spray as a defense measure. Made sense to me...20' +/- range and sprayed directly at the face and especially targeting the eyes would be seriously debilitating to a perp.

I knew what you meant. My best friend jogs all the time without her cell phone & listening to iTunes along country roads and I'm constantly lecturing her. She's a hard-as-nails farm girl (could probably take our her husband!) but even in our small community bad things happen. BTW I also saw the recommendation to use hornet/wasp spray.

It's a toss up. Should we live our lives always hyper vigilant and on alert, constantly stressing ourselves with adrenaline, or should we live life relaxed and expect that nothing bad will ever happen? It's easy to point out the shoulda, coulda, woulda in life, and yes she could have done things to have kept her alive. However, the fact remains that if the alleged killer had not attacked her, she'd still be alive.

I don't see that you can make yourself a victim by omission. Even if you are prepared to prevent an attack you are still a victim. There are plenty of victims of attempted crimes.
