KSDK - A crash involving dozens of horses shut down part of westbound Interstate 44 in Franklin County Wednesday morning.
Investigators say the driver of a trailer veered off the road and into the median. The truck overturned about 3:30 a.m. near Sullivan. Even at 10 a.m., the westbound lanes remaind closed and traffic was still backed up for miles.
A woman riding in the truck went to the hospital with minor injuries.
An animal response team is helping get injured horses out. 41 horses were in the trailer. At least 15 horses were killed in the accident or were euthanized at the scene.
Workers built a temporary holding pen on the highway, then loaded the animals onto trailers.
The horses were being taken to a slaughter house in northern Illinois.
A few weeks ago, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to ban the slaughter. Click here to read more about that ban. There are a handful of horse slaughter houses in the U.S., and the meat is often shipped to other countries, where the horses are eaten. 88,00 horses or other equestrian animals are slaughtered each year in the U.S.
