My Grandpa was in Palacios Texas during Carla. He said it was some kind of bad. There is still to the day a road sign marking the High Water Mark there. I was a kid during Hurricane Frederic. Katrina winds wasn't even comparable but Bayou La Batre Al. didn't get it like Biloxi. I think you are right about Rita though. I was shrimping and made port in Cameron La. the following year after Rita. It was still a mess.
 
I was stationed at NAS Millington (Memphis) when Camille came in to Ala/Miss. USN planes as far north as Meridian Miss relocated to NAS Memphis till our flightline was full and the rest had to go to Barksdale AFB. Pictures on the TV of Gulfport/Biloxi were hard to watch. One of my squadron mates was from Biloxi--his family lost everything.

It's not just the high winds--it's the length of time that 200mph is beating on everything in it's path. It's like a F-3 tornado that lasts 6-8 hours.
 
Rita was the worst thing I've ever experienced. Tornadoes left and right, ripping everything to shreds...

GB I hear the Camille story every year at my birthday. My mother's name is Camille and I was born right before the storm. (Same day as Ron and Fidel Castro)

My father was in Vietnam and their camp was overrun the night I was born. Said he found out when he was fighting for his life and he was certain they were going to be wiped out. The old man never talked much about it but he showed me the photographs from the next morning. Can't imagine having to shoot a bunch of kids, boys and girls, coming at you in the middle of the night with explosives and AK 47s. Just so you can get home to your own kid.

I have went through quite a few including Carla, I will second Rita was the worst of them all never seen tornados like that one carried. We had sustained 125 mph winds 70 miles inland. The twisters made this whole country looked like it had been carpet bombed. Took 13 of us two days to cut out two miles to the paved road.

When I was a kid the old timers told about the 1906 storm. Sounded like a real bad blow with high water. No warning except barometer dropping. They told of climbing oaks when tide began to rise. Parents hanging on to kids all night long. I think a couple hundred drown in our area. Before he rebuilt, my Great Great grandfather walked the woods looking for the high water debris line then settled there. In 100 years that place never seen tide water until Katrina. Cattle roamed free then. They said the cattle headed for high ground the day before. Must have sensed it coming.

Sometimes they get it right nowadays, sometimes they don't. NOAA Marine Weather has come close to getting me wasted on more than one occasion.
