Sheriffs battling uptick in cattle thefts in region

Sheriff’s departments in Southwest Missouri are trying to figure out if more than one group of rustlers is stealing cattle.

“We’ve had five reported cattle thefts since May, with about 150 head of cattle taken,” said Capt. Derek Walrod of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department.

What sort of precautionary measures are you all taking? I know my family has had some problems with this in SE MO as well.

I am seriously considering get out the old tattoo gun Again.
It won’t stop the theft but it sure will convict them if they are ever caught.
I use my SS number in both ears.
Years ago I use to tattoo my horses inside their upper lip.

Short of that, I guess the only other thing to do is go back to the old branding iron.
Or put a mule in with your cattle.

Do Sale Barns and responsible buyers check tattoos? Is there a central registration for someone to check for a rightful owner based on a tag or tattoo (or brand)? It seems this would make sense for a Sale Barn to check registrations. It would be a bit of a pain to transfer registrations when selling or registering a calf, but it would help this problem a lot.

How guard donkeys work
Donkeys probably do not deliberately protect livestock. Many donkeys dislike and are
aggressive towards dogs, coyotes and foxes and provide indirect protection for domestic
animals. Donkeys have exceptional hearing, a keen nose and excellent vision. They use
these senses to detect intruders. They bray, bare their teeth, chase, and attempt to kick
and bite dogs and coyotes. Some donkeys will also chase deer, bears, strange livestock,humans and other intruders in a similar fashion.

Mules react exactly the same way but are usually a little more aggressive.
I breed my pony to my mini donkey this year for this exact purpose.
