Continues to be HOT in Texas, especially in the Panhandle. Hit 105 deg. F. on Saturday. Cattle surviving well, even new calves! Drinking plenty of clean water helps. They're mostly laying around, catching as much breeze or wind as possible to keep "cool."
Noticed on some websites and in trade magazines that there is an increasing number of producers that are marketing their own beef (Longhorns and Commercial breeds). Guess the result of the USA and Global economy and precarious sale prices. However, some of them have been in it for a number of years and have some rather extensive operatings with their own USDA labels, etc.
So far, we're in good shape for first cutting bermuda hay this year. Had forward contracted a number of semi-loads. Hay is testing 16% plus CP. Using to supplement pastures. Also, should be good to have this winter when forage is dormant. BTW, we don't feed cubes or bagged feeds.
With the Nation's epidemic obesity problem, eating lean beef (and other lean meats) should help some. However, as long as consumers flock to the high calorie, fat, cholesterol "fast food" places...and you know the rest of the story!
Guess we'll be processing another Longhorn for our freezer next month...running low on beef. Our past 8 years of processing have averaged 36% packaged beef of live animal weight. Sure beats paying supermarket prices for questionable (sources) of beef...
