I find the ad rather amusing when you look at the picture below which was the grand champion Angus bull at Denver in 1980. I guess what they are saying is the packers didn't want the elephants they had turned their cattle into????

chianina ad in the 80's was,, increase the frame size in your herd in one generation... every one had turned their cattle into elephants not just angus

Fads come and go in fashion and cattle, I have never been one to chase the latest fad be it in clothing or cows. I still like my wrangler boot cut jeans, and a nice moderate Angus cow.

I'm thinking that would be around '86 for the 80th NWSS so if memory serves that bull is either Cobble Pond New Yorker or Dameron Linedrive?

I am looking at a photo of Cobble Pond New Yorker on page 22/ Angus Journal / June July 1985 in the Cobble Pond Farm advertisement and he shows no white. So if it is him in the above photo at Denver some how his white has been removed in the photo I am looking at.

Exactly Jeanne. I can't even remember the 2009 and 2010 national champions without looking them up, much less recognize them if they turned up in the yard tomorrow.

well, 25 years later we're still talking about it, how many other ads from the mid eighties can you remember (in Ag or anything else for that matter)? I suspect it gave the people producing the good working cattle a boost and may have been a backhanded swipe at the extremes of the show ring, though most people who have a basis in the reality of beef production know the space between the ground and the belly doesn't push the scales down much :) You only have to read the wording of the New Yorker ad to see there is no connection with reality. Saw Linedrive in the flesh (though there wasn't much) in '89 and not only was he a cripple he was mean too, another overdrive son Valedictorian was in the next pasture and he was just as ornery and twice as crippled.

Astounding when you read it for sure!

I don't know what the actual frame score of those bulls actually were, but one thing for sure is the photographers did a lot of laying down to exagerate the hight of those bulls, those cameras were right on the ground for sure.

Regarding elephants the carcass weight trend has been on an average 5 lb a year increase for 20 years and with the first discounts being levied at 900 lbs and only minimal discount at a 1000 lbs chances are the creep toward even heavier carcasses will continue.

I saw in the flesh McKenzie, Bold Ruler, R+J Spade, R+J Taurus and Waldeck Shocker in '89, McKenzie and Spade were both 68" at hips, Bold Ruler was 70", Shocker was a 'little' bull of 62", big old knot in his back and crippled. Almost forgot about Northcote Excitement, standing in a corral in MT on a cool breezy Fall day looking very unhappy at his circumstances.... I'd say most of these would be 10+ frame bulls.

I am about 99.9% sure the picture of the bull at the National Western is New Yorker. As far as him missing white on his underline in the ad, the picture could him been flipped (so it actually shows his left side instead of his right) or heaven forbid the picture was retouched..

Just for fun I looked up frame scores and at 48 months age, frame 8 is 62", frame 11 is 67.7 inches, and that's the end of the chart.
