Do you need to push it back up to them if it gets away from them Dave? Or do they just reach out to clean it up? I'm interested as I'm doing a feed containment area for feeding supplements during our next drought which may not be too far away I feel.

Mine is a little over a foot wide at the bottom. With the sloped back things slide down in. The 400 pound steers in there now have no problem cleaning it up. The wood trough bolted on the old tires is what I use to feed grain in. I could feed grain in that bunk but I never have to any degree. The grain would settle to the bottom and the calves would toss the hay out digging for the grain. So I would have to feed the grain first and wait until they were finished eating it to feed the hay.

Feed in am, top dress baled oat silage with dry rolled barley and pellets. 4 lbs second cut alfalfa and tubs for added protein and fill them up with grass haylage. We rake closer to fence line in afternoon. Most mornings they still have a bit left.

Looks like you hit triple 7's! Nice set of calves
All bought in ones, twos and threes. Started buying 550 wts in Sept. having to buy 650s now to keep them uniform. Bulls, horns, pinkeyes and lots that people couldn't count to two on after elastrator pliers removed. There are some real dinks in there but they are growing. Bought at 20 to 40 cents under steer price. Will forward contract them in next couple weeks for early March delivery. Not a Longhorn or a Corriente in the bunch…… some can tell them apart.

Looking good. Do you buy ones with short ears some? Do they ever get split off if so? I thought I saw one.
Short ears are discounted, some worse than others. When we contracted these it was stated a few short ears were in the loads. As long as feet and hocks were not affected by frost the ears are not an issue.
