Which breeding method consitently produces the best baldy calves? Black angus bulls on Hereford Heifers. Or Hereford Bulls on black angus or baldie heifers? Or does it not matter? Just looking at getting into the baldies but currently run a hereford operation. Thanks

I personally like hereford bull over brangus cows. I dont have either, I have charolais over beefmaster. I like a little leather in my calves. If I were to start over That is the way I would go.

Depends on the bull and the cows really. Thats a pretty hard question to prove what's best. The best marked ones doesn't make them any better than a different marked baldy.

I have done it both ways and haven't been able to tell much difference except depending how good a mother the cow is. Thats what matters anyways. You can have some good looking baldy's but if they don't perform, they're really no good at all.

Also, in from what I have noticed, you can get quite a few blacks with an F1 cow and an Angus bull. And more BWF with F1 cow and a Hereford bull. Or in several cases, which I have had, you can get some perfectly marked Hereford F2's with an F1 cow and a Hereford bull. They're all fine in my book as long as they perform.

All things being equal, if someone were just getting started, it would probably make more sense checkbook wise to start with hereford cows and an angus bull. Red is cheaper than black in most areas.

But as far actual quality goes, we would probably have heard enough compelling evidence for one side or the other by now to make a firm determination on the superior method. In other words, if there were a perfect answer to your question, we would already know it.

A cattleman who raises purebred Herefords and purebred Angus said he felt it was better to use Angus cows and Hereford bulls because "in general" Angus cows are better milkers.

If you currently have the Hereford cows and/or hfrs my recommendation would to keep them and put an Angus bull on them. If you were to sell the Hereford cows and/or and replace with Angus cows or hfrs. the Herefords would bring you much less than the Angus females of same quality and condition could be bought for. So you are starting behind the 8 ball to begin with. Makes for a lot of catching up to do. Actually by doing it this way, you should be able to buy a better Angus bull off the trade than what you have for a Hereford bull so you should therefore have better quality baldie's out of the Angus bull.

in either case it is not going to make much difference. if you already have hereford cows, it makes more dollars and sence to just go buy and angus bull. no matter how you do it if you use good bulls your going tohave good calves, regardless of breed of cows.

I don't think so. The bull is only half of each calf. If you have sorry cows, you won't necessarily get good calves no matter what bull you use.

I agree with Mr Frankie. You have to have good mamas so they can raise good calves. Otherwise the calves wont be able to grow to their potential and will always be little dinks.

I have had a lot of baldys and its true that angus cows are better mamas, but angus bulls are better sires. What can you do? Sell them all and go straight black!

I saw their website, I sent in an email 3 times asking other than color what were tha advantages? I said "why not just go and buy angus instead of trying to copy them. If you can give 3 good reasons I will buy 10 black hereford bulls". The breed association never replied back. I think its a scam to collect your registraion fee, the breed asociations know they have inferior cattle, they just want you to pay them for something.

It realy makes no dif. Roll the dice. What I don't understand is why bother. If both are bos tarus you are gaining nothing. If you are going to cross get some hybred vigor. If your in cold country go european x contenental. If your down south go bos tarus x bos indicus. Better yet just buy good cows, a good bull, and forget the color. Good + good = good. Color + color = shoe leather.

Are you saying that there is no heterosis when crossing british breeds with each other?

dun

Dun I'm sure there is some heterosis between any two breeds. But is it enough to count for anything. If I am wrong educate me.I am willing to learn. I will never know it all but always wanting to learn more.
