The Atheist and The Marine

A Untied States Marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was a vowed atheist and a member of the ACLU. One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes." The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed,"Here I am God. I'm still waiting." It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold cocked him; knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What is the matter with you? Why did you do that?" The Marine calmly replied,"God was too busy today protecting America's soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid things and act like an idiot. So, he sent me."

That is one misguided marine. He's supposed to be protecting, among other things, the professor's right to free speech. No one in this country has the right to tell another which God to worship, or to they worship one at all. Sorry, not funny, IMO.

I'm affraid I'm with Frankie on this one each to his own, in his beliefs and thoughts, but the Prof: would also be in the wrong for trying to force his oppinions on the students, as to whether they belived in God, or not. not funny. sorry.IMO

Would the story have worked if the class had stood in unison and said what the professor said - What is the matter with you? Why did you do that?

You're right two wrongs don't make a right, but sometimes a little make believe story where the bad guy gets his comeuppance is pretty satisfying to hear.

I liked the story.

That's the problem with a lot of colleges, professors and a good bit of this country. If you are a paid employee, you should not be allowed to use your position to spew your personal beliefs.

Neither the Marine (nor you) has the right to say the professor is the "bad guy" because you disagree with his religious beliefs, or lack thereof. If he's a citizen of the US, he has the right to express his opinion and it's the Marine's duty to protect that right.

I don't think it's funny because it hits too close to home about what our military has been doing the last few years. For too many years now we've been polite, smiled and turned our heads while some groups have tried to push their beliefs on others. No more.

The students don't have to attend that professor's class. They can complain to the University. Your defense of this physical assault to stop someone from professing opinions that disagree with yours is exactly what I'm talking about when I say it's wrong, unAmerican, in fact, to force your beliefs on others. That's not acceptable, especially for someone trained by the US Government to protect and defend the Constitution. This mythical Marine is either a bad Marine or didn't get proper training.

That's quite an accusation to throw out there without any proof. If what you say is true (and I've seen no such thing), I'll stand right next to you and help you fight it. And an editorial from a left leaning newspaper isn't proof in my book. It's an opinion. Just because it might be read by millions of people doesn't make it any more valid than any other opinion, and it sure as heck ain't proof of anything. Been hearing those black helicopters again? :lol: :lol:

It was all over the news a couple of years ago and the Academy is still working through it. An official report found:
'perception of intolerance' but not discrimination.'

This is not some left wing bashing. It's a serious problem that caused some qualified cadets to leave the AF Academy.

Truth hurts. I would have busted the professor myself. I worry everyday about the people I know who are over there. I pray for their safety, do you?

For your information in my jewlery box rests a memorial card from a Marines funeral. I stood outside of the church with the Patriot Guard to protect the family from the other protestors. I cried for his family. Can you say the same? I never knew that young man, but it was a very small thing I did for him.

I don't think the US Constitution is a joke. I don't think physical assault of someone because they have different religious views, sexual orientation, color of their skin, etc., is funny. In fact, most people and governments consider it a "hate crime." Marines are not exempt from legal prosecution, as we well know. No group has more respect from me than our military. IMO, using the death of a Marine as an excuse for this post is shameful. If you don't want everyone's opinion, don't post on open discussion boards.

You're not interested in how our military is being used by religious zealots, that's ok, don't look at the links. But there aren't enough realigious zealots to fill our military ranks. So where are when everyone else refuses to serve?

These folks give/risk their lives so professors and teachers can broaden the minds of students so the US does not fall behind the rest of the world in learning and intellect - and this joke has them doing a Gestapo dance on a teacher in a classroom?

I find it offensive and an insult to my friends who served in Force Recon.

NOT Allowed to say
- Anyone who has any opinion that the professor is EVIL and is trying to sway folks to his perverted way of thinking

I don't think that'd be very high on the list of reasons that marines deploy. What about denying God is mind broadening or intellectual?
