This thought was inspired by a post about buying children's clothes for school.

When we were kids, we did not live in a large new house like some of the kid's familes. We didn't have new cars and trucks and toy's like some of the kid's families.

But we sure had a pile of new clothes to start the school year off.

I wish that every kid starting to school will have good cloths a full tummy and a good nights sleep in a clean bed. I know it ain't so.
 
Yeah, there's something special about having brand new clothes for the first day of school, and shoes too....it's a comforting memory.
 
In this area there is a drive every year to get up money to buy school uniforms for the kids that need a little help. They help kids over several parishes (counties). I'm sure it means a lot to the kids and to the givers as well.
 
Kids are our most important resource. I wish that none in this world were suffering tonite. But I know otherwise. Ryder, what they do in your community should be done a lot of places.

We do that here too. Most of the places that do it use vouchers, so it can't be spent for anything else. If you see the looks on some of them kids faces when they have some money for new outfits, new shoes and some nice new school supplies, you can tell it's worth a lot to them.
 
Ya the clothes were great..unless you had to wear the colored Sears jeans with patches on the knees.

When I was a kid at a rodeo once I missed my calf in the roping and bucked off in the steer riding. I was in the calf scramble (no entrance fee for that) and could have cared less about it. But I won that event.
One of the prizes was a pair of Lee jeans with knee patches. If I had known I was going to get stuck with those jeans I would have lost on purpose.
 
I was lucky enough to have a Mama who knew how to sew a patch in from an old pair of jeans. None of those stupid iron on jobs that start coming loose an irratating the crap out of you. I was ashamed of them then. But the jeans my kids buy new now are alot worse looking than anything I ever had to ware. I won't let them buy them with holes in them. They can make their own holes with time. Who would have ever thought you would have to pay extra for holes?
 
They don't have anything formal in our community but a lot of anonymous donations are made through the Parent/Teacher groups.

Supplies are available to be ordered for the next year at the close of each school year. One of the options on the order form is to contribute additional funds to order another pack for a teachers room so that if they have students that cannot afford the supplies or if they run short during the year there are supplies are available.

I heard a radio advertisement that teachers spend on average $500 each year out of their pockets for classroom supplies that is not reimbursed by the school system.

In addition to the clothes and supplies I wish that there are enough teachers and classroom space to go around so that each child gets the attention and encouragement they need to excel in the classroom.
 
Yes, I would say that $500 out of pocket expense is a good estimate. I've already spent close to a hundred, and my school year starts next Wednesday. I haven't even resupplied the marker bin, bought extra pencils...any other material I want to use to teach.(high school, english) I hate to require kids to buy stuff out of pocket; I know that there are some that really can't afford it.
 
As important as the new clothes and school items, was the fact that my folks cared...they cared about me, my brothers, and even the teacher.....my parents cared to see that my homework was completed, and completed well. They cared that my teacher was treated by respect by me. They cared that my teacher liked me, and that I did my best for them.They cared that the teacher knew he or she was appreciated, and had full authority to bust my *ss, if I needed it. ( those days are def. over!)

They cared that when school was over, I was home, first the work around the house got done, them homework, then play if time still existed in the day.

They cared that I was in the house before dark. Where I was going and where I had been, and with whom. Again, for so many kids, those days don't exist.

Well, not all my clothes were new at the start of school, thats ok, they were clean, still good looking and functional. I was third in line for many of my clothes, and thats still ok.

I was never allowed to wear jeans, or sneakers, cept during reccess, or gym. My father cut our hair every two weeks, he knew just one way to cut it........very short, GI style. And that was ok.

I thank God, I did not have to worry about being in fashion by wearing some $200 pair of athletic shoes, or funky jewelry. Clean, and well kept clothes was the only requirement. That and be on time when it was my turn to milk. :cboy:
