A little long, but worth it if your a TEXAN. If your not, then you'll wish you were.

TEXAS

When you're from Texas, people that you meet ask you questions like, Do you have any cows?" "Do you have horses?" "Bet you got a bunch of guns, eh?"

They all want to know if you've been to Southfork. They watched Dallas.
Have you ever looked at a map of the world? Look at Texas with me just for a second. That picture, with the Panhandle and the Gulf Coast, and the Red River and the Rio Grande is as much a part of you as anything ever will be..

As soon as anyone anywhere in the world looks at it they know what it is.
It's Texas. Pick any kid off the street in Japan and draw him a picture of
Texas in the dirt and he'll know what it is. What happens if I show you a
picture of any other state? You might get it maybe after a second or two,
but who else would? And even if you do, does it ever stir any feelings in
you?

In every man, woman and child on this planet, there is a person who wishes just once he could be a real live Texan and get up on a horse or ride off in a pickup. There is some little bit of Texas in everyone.
Did you ever hear anyone in a bar go, "Wow...so you're from Iowa? Cool, tell me about it?" Do you know why? Because there's no place like Texas.

Texas is the Alamo. Texas is 183 men standing in a church, facing thousands of Mexican nationals, fighting for freedom, who had the chance to walk out and save themselves, but stayed instead to fight and die for the cause of freedom. We send our kids to schools named William B. Travis and James Bowie and Crockett and do you know why? Because those men saw a line in the sand and they decided to cross it and be heroes. John Wayne paid to do the movie himself. That is the Spirit of Texas.

Texas is Sam Houston capturing Santa Ana at San Jacinto.

Texas is "Juneteenth" and Texas Independence Day.

Texas is huge! forests of Piney Woods like the Davy Crockett National
Forest.

Texas is breathtaking mountains in the Big Bend.

Texas is the unparalleled beauty of bluebonnet fields in the Texas Hill
Country.

Texas is the beautiful, warm beaches of the Gulf Coast of South Texas.

Texas is the shiny skyscrapers in Houston and Dallas.

Texas is world record bass from places like Lake Fork.

Texas is Mexican food like nowhere else, not even Mexico.

Texas is the Fort Worth Stockyards, Bass Hall, the Ballpark in Arlington and the Astrodome.

Texas is larger-than-life legends like Michael DeBakey, Denton Cooley,
Willie Nelson, Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Janis Joplin, Kris
Kristofferson, Tom Landry, Darrell Royal, ZZ Top, Eric Dickerson, Earl
Campbell, Nolan Ryan, Sam Rayburn, George Bush, Lyndon B.Johnson, and George W. Bush.

Texas is great companies like Dell Computer, Texas Instruments and Compaq.
And LOCKHEED MARTIN AEROSPACE,! Home of the F-16 Jet Fighter and the JSF Fighter.

Texas is NASA.

Texas is huge herds of cattle and miles of crops.

Texas is skies blackened with doves, and fields full of deer.

Texas is a place where towns and cities shut down to watch the local High
School Football game on Friday nights and for the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and for the Night In Old San Antonio River Parade in San Antonio.
Texas is ocean beaches, deserts, lake s and rivers, mountains and prairies, and modern cities.

If it isn't in Texas, you probably don't need it.

No one does anything bigger or better than it's done in Texas.

By federal law, Texas is the only state in the U.S. that can fly its flag at
the same height as the U.S. flag. Think about that for a second. You fly the Stars and Stripes at 20 feet in Maryland, California, or Maine and your
state flag, whatever it is, goes at 17 feet. You fly the Stars and Stripes
in front of Pine Tree High in Longview or anyplace else at 20 feet, the Lone Star flies at the same height - 20 feet. Do you know why? Because it is the only state that was a republic before it became a state.

Also, being a Texan is as high as being an American down here. Our capitol is the only one in the country that is taller than the capitol building in Washington, D.C. and we can divide our state into five states at any time if we wanted to! We included these things as part of the deal when we came on. That's the best part, right there.

Texas even has its own power grid!!

One thing I've always thought was a bit odd about Texans is the seem to have this continual need for positive reinforcement. I'm guessing you could write something virtually identical about every other state, but people from other states apparently don't feel the need to tell each other how great they are.

Now all you Texans can prove my point by defending your fine state!

i kinda think the same thing chris. there's always something your gonna think is better in your state than others and find proof to back it up with. its all opinion. you'll notice it says i'm from co, but i was actually born in nevada and lived there for the first 13 yrs of my life and think nevada and colorado are the best. ;-)

Where ya from Chris? Are you ashamed of where you are from? Is that why dont list it? I promise that I wont make fun of you. I know we all cant be from Texas. That doesn't mean that you're not important.

I'm from Minnesota. And 9 ER thanks for giving me a chuckle about not needing to feel unimportant.

And don't get me wrong, I have no problem with Texas. Just an observation is all. Every month or so it seems somebody is trying to convince the rest of the world how great Texas is. Many great things have indeed come from your state, one that was left off the original post was George Strait, it doesn't get any better than that.

Not that I'm an extensive traveler, but I haven't been anywhere in the U.S. or Canada that I haven't liked. (With the exception of any major city that is.)

Also, about this time of year I do get a little envious of your warmer climate and may be inclined to rip on the southern states for no reason!

Being proud of where you come from is a good thing.
For example, any time I meet somebody from out of province and they say something like it's cold out today, or the mosquitos are really thick, or this is really boring, my answer is always. "This is nothing, you should try living in Manitoba...".and I just go on from there.

I, for one, could go on for years about the immeasurable wonders of montana, but that would just bring in more out of staters ("foreigners" as many locals refer to them).....we already have enough californians and floridians to choke a large mammal!!! so, i will just keep quiet, not brag up my wonderful state and enjoy the peace and solitude while i can...tourist season is coming...along with the additional 1000 summer residents to our small valley!!! i kind of enjoy the fact that we have the 2nd smallest population of the lower 48 and the largest amount of "elbow room"...OOOPS!!! said too much....i can hear the thundering herds now from the city!!!!

I don't understand it either. We've got enough people down here already, we don't need any more coming in.

Ok...no problem. I lived in Colorado for about 10 years, as well as being a Native Texan. Colorado can boast:

Fantastic mountain scenery, high elevation crystal blue lakes, unprecidented ski country, very high snowfall in winter (e.g., Wolf Creek Pass area, etc.), High desert country--Fairplay and San Luis Valley, Quality Orchards on West slope, Coors!, Mile High City, Rocky Flats Nuclear Facility, Eastern Colorado plains (+ wind, sand, blowing snow), Monfort Packing Co., Colorado Springs--famous tourist place along with Air Force Academy, Royal Gorge, Manitou Springs, Pikes Peak, Cog Railway, Pine Beetles, Forest Fires, Treacherous winter mountain passes that are unforgiving of lousy driving, Telluride!, Old abandoned silver and gold mines, other mines, Colorado State University (my Ph.D. Alma Mater)!, Evergreen and Dillon Colorado, as well as Aspen, Vail where all the famous snowbirds go to in ski season, Ordway Co., old WWII military base, Kit Carson Colorado--out in middle of nowhere. I could keep going, however, you get the picture. (Don't forget Colorado's slogan: "Tis A Privilege To Live In Colorado"--only the tough can survive the winter and roads there and perhaps lower wages since all the ski buffs will work for next to nothing to be close to skiing!

In final analysis: LONG LIVE TEXAS! REMEMBER THE ALAMO! And, yes, we're smaller than Alaska--but who in the heck wants to live in Alaska! LOL. And don't forget the King Ranch--larger than a number of foreign countries!

:cboy: ;-)

Is Texas history still taught in Texas schools?
