Been following the saga on PBS. The mixture if 21st century management with 19th century technology. Makes me wonder how we survived as a species.
:clap: to the cowboys. It was funny to me that the owner got caught with his pants down on the trade and wanted to pass it on.

What a show. That family had no clue as to how to treat the cowboys. If the cowboys had not held up their end of the bargain that ranch would not have made a profit. the wife was a witch and the girls were not much better. the boss was a wimpy little slacker. the cowboys should have traded the wife for the horses to indians, she was a bigger heifer than any of the herd the commanches got. :mad: :mad: :cboy:

The Ranch family was pretty self righteous and failed to have any insight into depth of the cowboys characters. I was delighted when Jared took his promised horse and the rest of the crew left with him. If it had been 1867 I don't think the cowboys would have stayed that long.

He said he had Business at the ranch.... er what business? Isn't all the business right now out there at the cattle drive? Mommy is right.

I was so completely grossed out by the rotting food left out and filth that was left for 8 days! And she reemed the first cook out for unsanitary conditions? Give me a break.

I did have to chuckle about the description of the "wild" cattle. They sure stood quietly in the chute, never once attempted to Take anyone on foot, and stood stock still quiet when approached by riders. Uh huh real wild.

I did like the buyer they had at the fort. He was the real deal. I didn 't see how the rancher came out of the sale to the fort. I was switching between that and 'Earl", my fave show. How did that come out? Did he end up selling the entire herd?

And when they got back and his wife greeted them in her underwear? That would have been pretty scandalous for 1867! It may cover a lot the this time, but back then, she may as well have been nekkid. :shock:

I have watched several of these shows and everyone is pretty clueless. My husband is watching and drooling for the chance to do this. Not me. Life was too hard for women back then. Everyone who sits around and dreams of a "simpler time" isn't thinking about dying in childbirth, illness, accidents, lack of sanitation, hot kitchens, cooking from scratch and endless work. Not to mention not getting to bathe every day!

The buyer paid $25.00 a head for I think 91 head and $15.00 a head for the rest. he did better than heshould have. I think they felt sorry for him so they bought the rest at a loss to themselves.

The "rancher" sold 91 head for $25 each and the remaining 40 head for $18 each.

The wife and daughters were complaining about the flies. Well what do you expect for food lying around for 8 days ? Had they been clean, there would have been a few flies but near as many.

This was a great show. It was actually filmed on the ranch that my husband's uncle manages. We got to hear a lot of the inside story on the show. pretty neat!

The "rancher" was very lucky he had the ranch hands he had. The 19 year old cook, coming from a family of 7 kids, was impressive in the "can do" attitude. The rancher bartering with the Comanche was pretty lame too. He exposed himself. Each of his daughters acted like an only child. The wife was deserving of him.

The follow-up interviews were awesome. The wife and daughters were all proud of him (apparently they learned little as a family). The the cow hands received some poetic justice.

In real life they would have been in for a hard go with all the cow hands leaving. The Comanches would have had a field day when the returned and found one green horn holding down the fort.

I half expected the ranch to have some improvements. It looks like they mostly sat around and the narrators noted the lack of gardening. What a shame.

I have never seen so many flies, even on dead animal carcasses. Why in the heck didn't they get the attractants away from themselves.

And the dishes after the party. OMG Seven day old dirty dishes in that fly infestation. Don't you know they were ripe.

I only caught bits & pieces of the last two shows. Pretty interesting stuff. Did they ever show those knuckleheads laying in a big supply of wood for the winter? Or canning or air drying veggies for use in winter? Or saving veggie seeds for the next year's garden? What little I saw, they seemed pretty clueless --- course back in the 1860's I bet the Comanches would have wiped out the Cooke's in short order in any event.

You got that right. All hat and no cows. He declared that if the man rode away on the horse he was going to kick his be nice. Then he sat there and stared. Not much a man of his word. Then the comment by the wife was something like, "they had no shotgun." EXACTLY. I was half hoping the cow hand would have gotten the best of Cooke. I have to admit that the cow hand dumping the "silver" out of the money bag was pretty lame too. Downright childish.

Cooke should have owned up to lots of other things too.

I really enjoyed watching that mini series .I think the owner need a whooping from the cowboys cause they didn't get no respect from him.He was to scared of his own wife to run the ranch properly.IMO they deserved the the ranking from the 3 staff members of a failing grade that they got. I liked it when the lead cowboy said the ranch owner was more like an oxen instead of a bull,because a bull was still intact.( :D )

I recorded the first two episodes and just got them watched but missed recording the last 6 :mad: Hoping they replay them, otherwise it will cost me $50.00 to see how it ends. Might pay it though because it at least helps a network with some decent family value programs that is a non profit network.

Thought of Caustic as I watched the second episode though, the city boy thinking he was going to run a ranch and had it figured that he only needed 70 or 80 head to make a profit for the ranch. But in reality he would need 200 head. Kind of the same stuff Caustic has preached on here. I guess that guy figured he could keep his Cows for $100.00 per head instead of $300.00 actually he was about he figured about 3 times to low, funny coincidence. Hobby Math I guess.

I saw what must have been the last couple minutes of the last episode were the Ranch owner was reading some report on how bad the had did and would have lost the ranch. Just want to see all the juicy stuff that happened in the 5 episodes before the last one.

There have been several shows like this on PBS such as Frontier House, and a show about early American colonization. They even tried one about living in the dark ages in England, but everyone got sick and the stopped it. Everyone gets a report in the end saying what would have happened had they stayed. If you ever get a chance, watch Frontier House. It is a hoot. I am sure that they will show the Texas Ranchouse again fairly soon. I want to watch the whole thing, too. Missed most of it. People think they have done a good job and then they get the report back saying that the all would have died. It is pretty funny.

Modern people just aren't used to working that hard. And they would never put people on that show that work with cattle for a living.

Since the ranch "survived" financially they are taking applications for the next episode. Which I assume will be filmed this summer?
