Tetraploid ryegrass vs gulf

Has anyone seen a noticeable difference between the tetraploid ryegrass(specifically jumbo) vs the regular and cheaper gulf.

Yes, Jumbo produces a lot more forage. Well worth the extra cost.

The tetraploid ryegrass varieties typically produce more forage than Gulf and in my opinion are worth the extra costs. In the trials, Gulf is year in and year out near the bottom of the trial. Here are links to the last 4 years of variety trials at Texas A&M's Overton Research station:

The triploid is 32.50 a sack at the coop in Taylor. Well worth it. I also like its bigger stem and think it probably does more underground organically for the soil. Mine is still in the shed....it didn't rain 10 days ago like the weather liars said and I bet right for a change....

I'm more interested in its reseeding ability. Gulfcoast ryegrass showed up here long before it was ever intentionally planted. A number of years back I did incorporate Jumbo ryegrass into the mix. Really wasn't a year for ryegrass to do well. I think you would be hard pressed to find the Jumbo variety in any of my pastures which I will interpreted as I less vigorous reseeding ability. For me that is more important than the amount of forage it can produce. If I grew it for hay I may have a different opinion. For me, ryegrass extends the cool season grazing about 30 days past that of oats (dependent on weather). Instead of buying Jumbo ryegrass seed, I'd rather spend the money on fertilizer and oat seed and let the volunteer gulf coat ryegrass bridge the 30 days between oats and warm season grasses.

I have seen more rye grass wasted by people letting g it go to seed. Just graze the punk out of it and plant more next year.

Marshall ryegrass is more cold tolerant than Gulf ryegrass, Gulf is more for the south, warmer winters.
I have planted a tetraploid here in the past called Zorro. Often called Italian ryegrass. Tetraploids have 4 chromosomes whereas the other only 2 .....if I'm not mistaken, its been a while since I grew any.

Did you plant rye or ryegrass? They are two completely different plants. When did you plant? How deep did you plant? In the south, we depend on ryegrass to extend our grazing season. Unless conditions are really right, we don't see much production in the fall or winter. It makes its growth from early March until late May or early June. Bermuda may green up in late March but typically does not make much growth until our night time temperatures average around 58 degrees (usually around the first of May here).

I never said it wouldn't re-seed under grazing pressure. I meant to say that people worry TOO much about re-seeding ryegrass and pull off from grazing to make a seed crop. They loose some of the highest quality grazing they will get at a time when the cows need it to rebreed for a spring calving herd ( breed in May for February calves).

I think marshal is a ryegrass, not just rye. I broadcast this. I've drilled, and broadcast, and prefer just broadcasting. That is, if I know I'm going to get a good shot of rain. I've also been seeing 150-300 turkeys in the field I planted it to though.
