I waited till it was zero to go and break ice this morning and was thinking the same thing. It didn;t feel all that cold to me. And I prefer anyting over 75 upto 100 as my prefered temp
 
You're right, not nearly the bite and breathe taking effect like the zeros and minuses in Janurary. That sun and calm wind made a huge difference today, even though it was a high of 14.

Didn't even check the temp at 6:30 AM, but at about 4:00 PM, it was 8 degrees plus a 13 mph wind, so below -0- with windchill. Snowing now, and it's coming down pretty good. We could REALLY use some snow, but I hate the bitter cold, and we've had it for a few days.
 
I checked temp here a couple times today. -15 in morning and -5 mid-afternoon. Don't think it made it to 0 today.

If temp makes it to the forecast +15 tomorrow it will feel like a heat wave! :banana: :banana: :banana:
 
Do you all get temps like these often or is it the worse you can remember. Over all we have had a fairly warm winter in northern Alberta it has sure varied this year any where from -45 to +8 c in dec to now this week -30c next week is forecast +1. We are used to cold temps and plan for them. how do you southern people cope if not used to it?

We've had some nights this winter as low as -13 I think, dun can correct me if I'm wrong. And in my 21 years I can't ever remember it getting that cold here before. So no, it's not normal.
 
We have block heaters or circulate heaters and oil heater on our tractors use light diesel p-45 and electric cattle waters just a few things you need to keep the farm going and always have a back-up plan in case of power failure or what is thrown at you in winter are you set up for this or what do you do when the weather turns?

We don't hurt to bad. I have springs or waterer's at about every place I have cattle, so I don't have much Ice to break. our diesel trucks have block heaters and any equipment I need to start at those tempatures has heaters or I park it inside where I can get it warmed up. The thing is it generally doesn't get that cold for many days before it will get back up to 35 or so.
 
Normally, our temps just east of the Cascades are not horrible -- or at least, not horrible for very long. That has been the pattern this year. BUT, we usually have 1-2 ft. of snow on the ground consistently from end Nov. to early Feb., and we aren't having that this year.

We had a winter 12 or so years ago like this. Snowed on thanksgiving abd it was still here on new years. Usually our lows are in the teens or 20s and when it snows it's gone in a couple of days. This year when it's gone we get more within a day or 2 and the highs have been running in the teens and 20s. A number of minus nights, the coldest was -15. This winter we've had more minus nights and even zeros then I remember in total for the past 15 years. A couple of winters ago my wife was mowing the lawn on chrismas day. Normally we will et one maybe 2 cold snaps each winter. This year we've had more then that and they hang on for days or a week at a time. We're supposed to get above freezing by the end of next week
 
Had 16 below yesterday. I'm calving, have around 15 now on the ground. Lost a 3 day old one yesterday out of a heifer, she claimed everything as hers. Would lock her up, and she was ok. Let her in the barn last night cuz' I'm running out of room, 2 cows calved and she ignored her calf. He didn't eat and got cold, I just couldn't save him. Too far gone. Oh, well, 60 more to go. gs
 
Coldest temp I can ever recall experiencing here is -36. That was back when I was younger and feeding with a Super M. Did have a comfort cover with a windshield FWIW.

The "comfort" part might have been a slight exageration but it sure beat nothing by a long shot anyway :P :P :P

One thing, no matter how cold it got, you could always depend on those 6V gas Farmalls to start. Only thing that stopped them was if the spring on the ignition points broke. Yes, I did have to change a set of points occassionally outside in less than ideal temps. :yuck:
