Been a while since I shot a wallhanger Whitetail buck, and I guess it's about like everything else, gone up. What's the going rate in your neck of the woods for shoulder mount WT's.?
 
My friend up here in MN gets 450 for deer, but he's purty good.
1 1/2 years behind. :shock:

Couple years ago was 250 for a shoulder mount "semi sneak' now the Ol' boys getting 300. I think the 1st one years ago cost me 125.00.One thing about it, good Taxidermy is a heck of a lot better than a bad Taxidermy.

I have been doing taxidermy for about 15 years. I now only do select custom work for clients that don't mind shelling out the big $ or for close friends and family. Funny thing about allot of hunters. They spend 40k on a big 4 wheel drive, 7k on a 4-wheeler, 1200 on a rifle, hundreds on clothes and boots and stands, 4 to 5k for a guided hunt and then when their trophy is dead they start bargain hunting for a taxidermist and most wind up paying the cheap guy and they get a mount back with bulging eyes, flat ears and a dried preservative hide that starts to crack after 2 years.

Taxidermy supplies have risen drastically in cost over the last 5 years. Manikens are made from a petroleum based foam and we all know what the price of oil has done. The EPA stepped in and banned allot of the cheaper foams due to environmental concerns. Shipping has went up due to fuel surcharges. Health care, food, electric, gas and general cost of living has increased also.

I would look really hard at any taxidermist charging less than 350 in lower cost areas and 400 in higher cost areas for a basic shoulder mount. Pay less and you will get a mount with corners cut and you will never be truly happy with it. Big bucks are sometimes a once in a lifetime thing. Look for the best taxidermist you can find and wait that year to get it back.....it will be worth it.

About $400 to $700, some have options for the plaque that mark it up.

Think careful about what HOSS said, I have a couple taxidermist friends that say the same. Especially about the curing, if it takes less than a year to cure then corners are being cut.
 
The taxidermist I'm talking about up here in N MN has the capes tanned [the only way to go] Never a worry about the capes curing or going bad.
