My main food growing up was brown beans, cornbread, and taters, now the govment is making the schools stop serving them I guess they think they are unhealthy, just don't know whats happening.

Schools are now starting to serve breakfast, dinner, and supper, just so the kids will get some good healthy stuff to eat.

They ought to check the contents of their dumpster and see how much of that "good healthy" stuff is being pitched because the kids refuse to eat it.

There's the "hoax and chains" we're looking for.............

still hard to beat years later

Working as I do in a school, I have made the following observation:

Kids will, given a choice, most of the students I know will choose the least healty alternative from the school menu. We had to revamp the menu here in order to make it more healthy. We now offer choices, a sandwich shop, two hot meal choices, and salads. For the most part, they students will stick to the carbs. Fruits and veggies that are served will be tossed. I can't tell you how many apples and oranges I have seen get tossed, without any bites out of them, into the trash. If a sandwich has veggies on it, they will get tossed.

We don't have snack machines anymore. We don't have a snack bar for stuff like nachos, we don't sell soft drinks any longer. The only place to get one is in the teacher's lounge, where I guess it is still okay to have sugar...

We do offer free breakfast to all students. It used to be a joke. Pizza? Poptarts? Muffins? Not healthy stuff at all.

My son carries his lunch. He doesn't go to this school, but he has never cared for cafeteria fare.

Kids are still as fat as they ever were. They just go home and eat junk that they missed during the day.

I started to school in 1950 in Luling Tx most of us were from poor familys just getting out of the depression, a lot of the Mexican kids were from migrant familys , I do not know of any of them that went hungry, as they got on the bus the smell of mexican cooking was still lingering in their clothes from a home cooked breakfast. They carried their liitle brown sack lunches with grease ozzing thought the paper sack from their lunch that their mother had prepared for them. The poor white kids carried sack lunches. The town kids ate at the caferteria for .15 c it was a balanced lunch. Their were no overweight kids unless they had a medical problem. Never went to school with Blacks we were segragated until 1964, the year after I graduated. My point is when did parents stop being responsible for their kids and it went to the govment and tax payers.

I thought taters, beans and tobacco were 3 of the major food groups
cigarettes, coffee, and cokes used to be my major food groups. Reckon I would starve to death today since the people that do our thinking for us and look out after our well being have run the cost of cigarettes up so high.

School food was bad even when it was bad for you, now its probably worse. I sure am glad public schools had 4-H, ag class, weilding, woodworking, small engines, mechanics 1 & 2. School taxes have gone sky high so our kids can be taught the liberal policies of this country.

80% of the kids at the school where I am employed are on free or reduced priced lunch. And we serve breakfast free to every student. We also serve free and reduced lunches in the summer. I know that there is poverty in this district because I have seen it. But I think that 80% is pushing it. I think that once people start expecting a hand out, it never ends. If you can afford to smoke and drink beer, you can afford to buy your kid's lunch, or make it at home.

Being on free or reduced lunches was a thing to be ashamed of when I was in school. Maybe that was wrong, but that's the way we saw it. But then again, teen pregnancy was something to be ashamed of, too, and well...

Go Lammie! Our district is only about 24% free/reuced but we have the same issues with parents. Nothing
is ever their responsiblity. I know times are hard right now but seems like there's an epidemic of "gimme". I
feel for the folks that have always worked and still have a tough time because I've been there before, but some
will work the system for whatever they can get. And this is how their kids are learning to deal with life.

None of the food is hand made anymore. Most of it is pre packaged and frozen. There are no more "cooks" in the lunchrooms. If there are, then they need to be paid their weight in gold.

My school had cooks. I can remember them sorting through beans to put them on to soak for the night. We ate a lot of beans in our school. Cornbread, fried chicken, strawberry shortcake. I didn't like the goulash, but it was about the only thing I didn't eat. That, and spinach.

Guess i was lucky, went to a small rural school that had a couple of fine cooks. They could fix a good meal out of about anything.
Me to RBB....started school in a rural 2 room school. Ate at home most of the time becaue we lived across the road but when I did get to eat in what we called the "Lunch Room" the food was great...just home cooking but you also got all you wanted. can't remember what it cost but couldn't have been much. A lot of red beans potatoes etc. Can't remember what kind of meat they served. Maybe there was none. lolol. But the food was out of this world. Mom did let us eat there on friday because it was "hamburger day". Eat all you want too.

I saw a sign in the produce section at HEB -- "white potatos CAN NOT be bought with a WIC card." I'm not sure why,but the food police are coming.. "They" are trying to make it so that sodas and candy can't be bought with Food Stamps.. So what do you think, good idea or bad?

As long as they leave tobacco and booze alone they won;t get any complaints

At home we had to choices, Take or leave it.

Same here, and if it was left, that's what I had to chose from to take to school for lunch the next day. Learned you can make a sandwich out of anything and still do. I ate allot of mustard sandwiches. We didn't have a cafeteria at the school I went to, we had a lunchroom/library/auditorium/gym/..........

I went to a Catholic school thru 8th grade. All the cooks were old Italian grandmothers. I have never eaten that well before or since.
